All,
we’re getting closer to finding a builder (should have bids in two weeks) but i was wonder what your view is of whole house fans? The house will be in gig harbor, WA (can actually see the water so there is a certain amount of humidity but nothing like the midwest or east coast) where we can see mid to upper 80s (A/C is very rare in the NW) in the summer but cools down into the 50s/60s at night so i thought a whole house fan would be ideal. the house will be two story with about 3000sqft. will a whole house fan work? what should i do with attic venting? any thoughts would be appreciated!

My only intelligent contribution is:
If you want one, plan where you're going to put it so the framing can be built right from the get-go.
It's a lot easier to fraem for it ahead of time than to retrofit the thing later.
Never argue with a woman when she's tired — or rested.
I vote yes. I have one and it's working good for the past 10 years. It's no subsitue for AC but if the house is good you can keep it tight during the day and keep it cool then recool at night.
Couple of issues to consider.
locate away from sleep/sound sensitive areas
prewire and try to set up a wireless control or timer
make sure there is plenty of attic vent/free flow so as not to restrict fan function.
Plan on insulated cover for winter/ save some heat.
