Help! I’ve been from Tytewadd to Siemens to Leviton looking for a reliable, warranteed TVSS system to go on a 200A main panel. The only thing I can find with a long-term “downline” warranty against damage is a Leviton device that fits into the meter socket. My utility is considering the idea, but I’m not optimistic. Anybody had real experience with a TVSS protecting a house? Please, no shocking stories….

Aaron,
Utility company in my area offers the Zap Cap service but its not cheap. I don't have it but if I recall its something like a $40 installation fee and then $10 a month and the disclaimers with it makes it sound like they don't cover much if you have anything damaged.
Have you looked at the surge suppression breakers made by Square D to just cover certain circuits?
Mike
*We've discussed this recently. You might find it in the old posts. The consensus as I remember was that whole house surge protection was expensive and didn't really do the job. Better off protecting individual pieces of gear.Oh yes one guy made the point that a lot of surges affecting your house come from stuff in your house.
*Look up you public service commission or regulatory web site and e-mail them. Ask who is responsible for voltage surges in your utility service area. I lost a couple of ceiling fans and a tv to a surge a few years ago. My utility company reimbursed me my replacement cost because they are liable. Of couse I work for them and that might have helped, but thier liability was and is not common knowedge. I had to find out from the state regulatory agency. Our PC did not get zapped because it was on its' own surge protector.Dave
*Aaron I have a Sq D panel and used a surge breaker made by Sq D. Does it work ? I do not know if it has or not but I have had no surge damage. I have seen plenty over the years as an electrician.
*1. You need telephone, cable, outbuilding, metal roof, etc., protection also for "whole house" to work;, or as stated in previous threads, you easily bypass the meter/main panel protection. 2. If you don't have a good earth ground, you get relatively small benefit from transients such as lightning - "good" equals when you can take a 100W bulb from 120V to ground with the ground temporarily disconnected from the service return and get > 80% light, very rare in a home ground, especially during winter or dry seasons)3. "warranted" as you describe it is better provided by insurance. Also, look at: http://www.joslynsurge.com/joslynsurge/intro.html
