I went to one of those auctions of construction materials, and bought some prehung doors; door was fine, but the rest was trashed. That was fine with me, because I only wanted the doors for a remodel.
I unscrewed them, threw the frames away, and went to the house to install them. Lo and Behold! They were 1/4″ too narrow. Hmmmmm! Went to the Big Box and measured prehung and slab doors. The prehungs had an OPENING equal to the nominal size; the slabs themselves were the nominal size. (Example: 2-6 prehung measured 29-3/4 wide; 2-6 slab is a full 30 wide.)

*I our area the standard for a pre-hung doors is 3/16" undersize to the high side of the bevel and the inside measure of the jamb is full size. The jambs tend to be about 9/16' thick so the overall width is smaller than the old rules I saw many years ago. I figure that things tend not to be square, level and plumb so the smaller the better. Some door shops buy their door blanks under sized and with a bevel. My experience is that they are sized inconsistantly. I have better luck with the shops that buy full size door blanks and under size them on their door machine when they joint the edge bevel.
