I am curious. Is it the money? The work? Or something else?

the chicks. Chicks dig carpenters.
the money and the fame are nice too.
or....the fact it's one of the few "careers" where you can make up your own rules. Work for someone...work for yourself...work by yourself......big company...small.....commercial....residential.......pick framing.....or trim......or remodel and do everything.
the sense of satisfaction after a hard days work....looking back at something you've created....looking forward to designing something someone else is going to take pride in having in their home.
I try to put as much of an artistic spin on it as I can. That...and striving to become a "true craftsman". And the whole "manly" aspect of sometimes beating the elements...or just getting some sun and catching a breeze. Jeff
*I've always had lots of satisfaction from keeping my hands busy and from having something to look at by the end of the day. I also like solving problems, and there are no shortage of them is this business.
*chicks? There's chicks? What've I been missing for thirty years?
*Can't work behind a desk, would drive me nuts. Like the fact that you made something. Can show off a little. A defined freedom that cubicle dwellers can't get.
*Buyin tools-usin tools-makin sawdust-makin money-Buyin tools-usin tools-makin sawdust-makin money...Yeah Jeff, where's all the chicks?
*I have the curse of the need to work with me hands.I create, therefore I am. I am the artisan type. Like to be able to cruise around town or points further and think I had a hand, literally, in building this place or that place. That I write my own schedule is a perk.Money is further down the list.I have worked under the flourescents and it drove me nutty. Besides, in an office environment, the individual's work is so buried under the team concept that it may as well be nonexistent. Also, hardly any room for freedom of expression. I suppose a graphics office might interest me. Still, someone else would be writing my sched.
*You guys saying I got the only chick that digs carpenters? Wow....good thing she's hot! Too bad I got to her first! Jeff
*I am in this business because I truly enjoy what I do. The reward of designing then building something, wheather it is a deck, a whole house remodel, or restoring a historic Victorian, is hard for me to put into words. I don't really consider that part of my day as work. Work to me is all the paperwork and time spent scheduling materials and subs, and lining up more jobs that are enjoyable to do.Oh yeah, and the chicks dig carpenters.
*I am in my business and have no desire to leave it...simply because I have a passion for it.If you love your job and have a passion for it, you will find that you do not like to refer to it as work...but as an exercise of expression.
*The sex, the money, the good food and drinks....constant laughs. We ARE the "rat pack" of construction.
*I second Jeff's emotion......except "where's the chicks?" I missed out on that part.
*Sex and danger. The days go quick when you enjoy what you do. Another factor for me is the potential is limited only by your desire.I think in this business, if you really are talented in a lot of areas, and not afraid of working long hours, you can achieve success. In some occupations, I'm not sure that is possible.I'm not really good at kissing ass either.
*The work first.I love it.The money is a big part also. And then there's the women.Don't tell my wife about the women.Of course, I'm not the "hands on" type when it comes to the women. Hell, I'm old enough to be their father. It's just nice to have large groups of beautiful young women following me around and admiring my every move.It is getting expensive to by lunch for all those women everyday. Good thing the money is good in this business.Ed.
*I just started a very similar post about the "W" word in the business section. I hadn't realized that this thread was here and my post would have fit in quite nicely.Anyways, I can tell you without a doubt that if you will set your "Whys" high enough, you will be able to do the things you like best, while still accomplishing some other things that might address some different aspects of your financial as well as spiritual life. For instance, Stan loves building stairs, but that shouldn't preclude him from also creating a wildly successful business that capitalizes on his unique skill. His "business" should be able to provide him income even if he lays down the tools. It can be done, if there is a will.In my own endeavor, I often started on the path to accomplishing this same idea, but always short-circuited it by not following through on some awesome ideas. If I had stayed with the process....blue
*>And then there's the women.I was wondering where you guys were getting all the chicks....and then I remembered Lilly . . . .The prettiest girl I'd ever seen. . . the love of my life..... Stuck by me through thick and thin....even lay by my side in the old camper stuck on a mountain side in the dead of an Alaskan winter to keep me warm....never complained about my crazy ways, was faithful and loyal...I loved that girl like no other....still wear her tags around my neck.
*..because all the good lion-taming jobs are taken...and to echo Stan Foster, I love what I'm doing; becoming a journeyman woodcrafter by journeying; I've been through framing, finishing, cabinets, furniture, stairs,(still doing them), boats, airplane interiors, timber-framing (current challenge),and am also currently working on the restoration of a1920 era rumrunning boat,65'long by 12' beam by twin Liberty aircraft engines.Rumrunning, probaly the last true free-trade where Canada benefitted! Cheers,Phil.
*This that I create is who I am. May not be much of a life, but it's my life.I'm with you on that one, Jim
*I agree with the sentiments already posted, but I have to add one which inspired me.My father and grandfather were both construction workers and my heros. They carried an air of accomplishment and pride. They were true men and I wanted a taste of their satisfaction. To work with others who got things done no matter the hardships. Men who you could count on to be pulling with you when things get tough. There's no BSing a tough job done, and we all know who's responsible for getting the hard work done on a construction site. It's simple, I'm a simple man.Looking back with fond memories,Terry
*I do it because I love to do it, money has never been a motivator. I'm fortunate enough to be able to live where I do, enjoy what I do, pay the bills and stay a half step ahead of the game. I like the sense of accomplishment, like at the end of the day I feel like my time was well spent. Simply put I can't picture myself doing anything else. As for the "Chicks" thing, do chickadee's count? We got lots of those.
*chixdiggit.....are there ever any better reasons?.....
*The chicks!!!My DW is fond of saying that every woman in town wants me.......To redo their kitchen!!Mr T
*It's a condition of my parole. I'm a lifer.
*Jeff,It's your hammer!She doesn't dig you so much.Sher thinks your hammer's sexy.
*Piffin,My wife thinks my hammer is sexy too. The trouble is it's always at some other womans house. I haven't had time to finish a project at home in five years. But I've got sawdust in my blood. Couldn't live if I didn't get a wiff of pine every morning.
