Just came across this pic and was wondering?

What do you mean by "different"?
That pic is of Uponor¯ FKA Wirsbo¯.
There is a ring that is placed on the end of the tubing that provides the strength of their joining system.

I guess my question was about how the joint works. I can't see how it would work. All the pex I've seen is just tubing.

You expand the tubing and the insert a fitting and the tubing shrinks around it The band is to give it more "shrinking power".It is really part of the fitting and not the tubing. Kinda strange the way tht they show it..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Uponor pex has a 100% memory.
After you cut the tubing to length you slide on that ring, which is made of pex also.
You then insert the expansion TOOL after you expand the tube & ring, remove the tool & place barbed fitting into the tube.
Since the pex tube & ring have a 100% memory they contract back to their original size sealing itself to the barbed fitting.
