Brick chimney comes up through a low pitched roof(barely a 3/12). Chimney is 41″ perpendicular to the rafters. High side of chimney is about 2 feet from the ridge.
Building a cricket behind it seems pointless since it would also have to be very low sloping due to proximity to ridge and width of chimney. It seems like I would just be creating more places for potential leaks. Or would a cricket work? I live in the southeast where it mostly rains with an occasional snow or ice storm in the winter. Ice storms can cause ice dams so have to be a little cautious about that.
Is there a proven method for flashing a chimney like this?
Any references/websites anyone can reccomend?
Can I just bend a piece up the back and make it a little asymmetrical so water will drain around it and then counterflash and step flash, etc. like normal down the sides and front.

That close to the ridge, I'd just install a solid back pan. I'd make sure it turned up the chimney about 6 inches. Can't tell where you are since you haven't entered any profile info, but this works fine in my climate.
OOPS, I did it again.............................
greencu,
I agree with you. that close to the ridge we aren't talking about that much water flow----even under the worst of circumstances. Actually----a cricket presents other difficulties as well.
I would ice gaurd it carefully----make sure the icegaurd eventually spills any water back out on to the shingles---instead of lower areas of felt--.

I agree, though I might go 8" up the masonry - depending on my own assessment of likely water flow. This close to ridge doesn't seenm like it woulod get much, but I have lived in SE and seen it rain pretty hard.I remember once trying to drive home in a huricane and drops of rain as big as my thumb were splashing down on the hood of my cara. There was at least an inch of water on that hood 'cause it couldn't run off fast enough, and there was six inches in the roadway. Most awesome rainfall I have ever seen!

I would build a cricket. Its more work but it'll be foolproof.
What you need is a "saddle". it can be fabbed from 20 oz copper, or 24 ga galv alum. Contact a sheetmetal(tinsmith or roofing co. in your area. They will know what to do.
FWIW, "saddle" and "cricket" are the same thing.I'm with the saddle/cricket group, 2' seems a bit far to me to just lione with flashing material. Are there large trees in the area likely to fill that space with leaves and junk?If so, another tickmark in the saddle column.
