Has anybody had experience installing random width wide pine floors? I have a cusomer that would like to install them in their master bedroom. They would like to match the rest of the house which is wide pine faced nailed to the subflloor. I have no problem doing this but, 1) Where can you get random width wide pine flloors (massachusetts), and 2) How do you sand the floor, without shredding the sandpaper, if you face nail the baords. Is the simple answer to #2, just set the nails below the surface then sand?
Thanks
Tim

There are lots of places to get the wide plank pine, especially up your way. Just do a search, but here are a few.
Carlisle
Timberknee
Housatonic Hardwood
I think you have answered your 2nd question.
Two suppliers that I have visited:
Carlisle Wide Plank Floors - http://www.wideplankflooring.com/. I've bought wide plank maple from them and had a very good experience.
http://www.longleaflumber.com/ - I've visited their operations and didn't see exactly what I wanted for my project but they were very helpful and I may well go back there for another project.
An idea for installation and sanding face-nailed boards that was offered to me by a guy who sells salvaged flooring and has done the installation this way (I haven't tried it yet but intend to):
Use a brad nailer to face-nail the boards into place with small head or no-head brads and a nailer that will sink them below the surface. This is not an adequate nailing job for the long run but will suffice temporarily. Sand the floor. The brads below the surface won't rip the paper as long as you don't sand too deep. After sanding go back and face nail with your flooring nails or reproduction cut nails, into the joists.
Hope this helps.
Just make sure they really want 'em, and they understand that gaps will develop.
First thing - use the advanced search - look in upper left corner of your screen here - to read other threads on this topic. It comes up about every three weeks.
Two ways to deal with the nails - three actrually if they would want drilled contersunk and plugged.
But for face nails, you can set them deep enough for the sander to run over them or you can get the whole floor finished first and then place the nails. This altter is a lot more work. You have to install with a flooring nailer first in the T&G, then finish, then go back and face nail VERY carefully. This can also make for some shifting along the joints which some finishes don't like very much.

face nail VERY carefully
When a little kid, was told by pop that a true pro (like an uncle) was someone who could face nail a whole wall of siding or a pine floor full of 10d finish nails - without a punch and not have a single one proud or any wood dents - very practiced skill to just deflect the wood surface enough without indenting.
PS: Do not use waffle face hammer <G>. Think the uncle used to polish his finish hammer head with 400 grit paper every few days, used for nothing else.
I'm gettin tired of typing this stuff about WPF...you tell him Paul...lol.
I think I have my rep from Timberknee where I bought 95% of my entire houses floor from coming to TipiFest to give a little rap about WPF and some raffle prizes I hope.
Carlisle I used in the living room but the price was exhorbatent!!!!
If anyone goes to Timberknee tell "TIM" (my rep) that Andy Clifford sent you and he should do you solid...no kidding!
Far as samding goes if I get into that I know I'll be trunicated cause its NOTHING like sanding a normal strip floor! Trust me.
Hope yer feeling better----->Paul<------Be well

Thanks for such a quick response I appreciate the information
BobI: I had thought about installing them that way, so I may just try it. I will let you know how it turns out
