Winder Stairs – Lay out questions
Good Morning.
I have found 2 postings for Winder Stairs in FMB Online. One shows a simple picture of winders no longer aloud by code (No 6″ minimum tread).
The other shows a winder being build with 6 steps turning the 90 not 3 like I want to do. From the article I picked up on off setting the winder stringer (the lower portion with the kite stairs).
Whats not shown is how you tie the front stringer into the winder section. This appears to be the mystery.
Does any one have any insight?
I want to build them so I can apply bull nosing and face nail flooring after. I’m going to drywall the backside (underside) as well.
Any help would be great. Lots of pictures would be better.
Hope you can help.

A few options John (sorry, no pictures):
You can frame each tread independently, attaching each one to the walls, or supporting them on walls built below the stair.
If you don't have the headroom for that, you can build a landing, but cut your stringers out of larger-than-normal lumber, such as 18" LVL's. They will allow you to create the curved shape the stringers will need in order to create the winders. Jed Dixon had an article on this technique sometime in the last 2-3 years in JLC.
Maybe the best way is to house your treads and risers in the skirt board, which means you don't need any framing at all. Andy Engel had an article in FHB on this technique sometime in the last 1-2 years.
Did you look for the FH article I mentioned in your other post?
