I have received lots of great advice here but now for something completely wacky. I installed two 36″ window boxes in steel cages for my wife. Drilled through hardiplank into 3/4″ plywood sheathing and installed with three 4″ lag bolts along top and brackets below. Holds great. Drilled holes for THIRD (and last) window box on gable end of house (diff. wall from first two). Drilled four inches in and no bite — just insulation. Drilled a few more holes laterally (with useless help of stud finder) and still no bite. Tried 6″ lag bolts — no bite. Now I am scratching my head. Options: a) abandon project and put third window box on ebay b) remove one or more courses of siding (don’t ask me how I’d do it) and screw 3/4″ plywood strip along entire course — there must be studs somewhere c) demo some of the inside wall to figure out what’s going on (lower 34″ of wall hidden inside window seat so it could be easily demo’d and patched). Any recommendations?

Greetings 80,

what do you see inside the hole, and did anything come out beside the insulation? lots of houses here are built with some osb on the walls, and some of the foam insulation board, with the osb at the corners for stiffness...maybe you have gone right thru the foamboard? 1/2 to 5/8 thick or so, round here it's yellow-brown foam with a silver surface
if you can go up under the window from inside (inside the window seat) without making a real wreck of hte place, that's probably what i'd do, and put in some blocking.
