I’ll be removing about twenty full-window screens from my home in preparation for its repaint in a few weeks. Some of these screens need repair due to cats clawing them up. Someone offered his view on screens as something he didn’t like because it hold dirty rainwater in behind the screen to settle on the exterior portion of the sill.
Well, inspecting the sills and he is correct. Those sills are dirty. I am curious if there is a common philosophy when it comes to screens. I know they benefit when you want to open the window and not have bugs in the house, but we rarely open the windows because of pollen, construction dust & dirt, etc. in our ‘still in development’ subdivision.
So, did you leave you window screens on or remove them over the corse of ownership of the home?

I see no reason to have them unless the window is opened. What else are they for?

Sense of security? Ooo, electrified screens. Kitty go poof!
Jeff Foxworthy said it best,"I love cats..got two of them...on either side of the fireplace!"
I like open windows and dislike bugs. All my windows either have vinyl exteriors, or screens on the inside, so I don't run into the problem you mention.
Whether windows are opened is truly one's preference. I do enjoy fresh air; just dust collects more frequently. Believe I saw dust discussed on another post!
A pet resistant screen is available via both Lowe's & Home Depot. The screen is obviously heavier than normal so one would not wish to use at every window. I have not yet used, but will be doing so soon as result of both cat & dog wanting in & out. And seems they never enter or exit at the same time!
If damage resulted from a cat you own, notice at which window it primarily resides & use the pet screen there. Caution: If your cat remains indoors, then a neighboring cat might also claw from the outside if your cat is in the window. Hard to believe, but one day I heard what sounded like hammering in the house; only to learn there were a couple of crows sitting on the deck railing & pecking holes in the screen. Needless to say I had to trash the pecked screen.
