We’re building a Southern-style home with a front porch. OUr plans call for six 3-0 x 6-0 windows, each with a 1-0 x 3-0 elliptical transom. All of my window bids are coming in with the transoms being just an extension of the window or, in other words, just a long window with a rounded top. I had invisioned two separate parts…the window and the transom. Is that possible? Am I asking for the wrong thing. Someone said it should be an “eyebrow” transom, not elliptical. What is the difference?
Do I have to go to a wood to get this combination?

Hmm, you should be able to mix-n-match available window units to make a proper transom unit.
I wonder if your bidders are trying to simplify things a bit too much by ordering (or proposing to order) a round-top instead.
Do your drawings show the lower window terminating, and/or call out the elliptical/eyebrow unit above as a transom? (Double-checking that the intent was communicated.)
I could be wrong, but I don't believe any of the name-brand window companies make or sell an elliptical transom in a 3/0 width.
Most all sell arch tops (circular arc, but clipped, not a full half circle), and circle tops (a full half circle), but not elliptical.
I used to be in a segment of the millwork business, and wood elliptical transoms for entry door units with sidelites, and patio doors, were readily available. But these were units with widths from about 60 to 75 inches. I never saw a smaller one available.
If elliptical is what you absolutely must have, you need to bear down on your lumberyard supplier, the outfit that will get you the windows, and discuss the special order route.
