We are planning a major remodel on our home which will involve both new and replacement windows. Having a difficult time finding info. comparing cost, quality, efficiency, etc. We live in Western PA (i.e. cold winters) and would appreciate input or info. about windows with high quality and efficiency (and not necessarily the cost as in Pella or Anderson, feel that you are paying more for name and advertising).
THANK YOU!!!

There are a lot of Internet resources available. First, search this page's archives, as there's been a lot of window talk in the past. Then go to http://www.nfrc.org for the National Fenestration Rating Council. Also, do a few Web searches with key words like thermal windows or insulated windows.

*Kim -- we are just finishing our new house and used Semco Windows, out of Wisconsin. They're not one of the big advertisers but the quality of their windows so far in our experience is outstanding. We live at 8200 feet and our winter weather includes regular gale-force winds, snow and subzero temps -- we can't feel any infiltration, no little whistles -- had thought we'd need to have insulated curtains or shades for wintertime, but have nixed that expense. Because of our altitude, we can only have double panes, no argon-fill, which at regular altitudes should really add to insulation values. And no, I don't work for them (nor any cousins, etc....). If you want more info, let me know.
*Check out Peachtree. I agree that once you reach a certain level of quality/performance you pay more for advertising. Jeff/Buck Const.
