A local federal agency “surplused” a 12′ X 12′ motorized “movie” screen to a local non-profit. I called it a “movie” screen, but same type as used for slide shows and the like.
This is a manufactured unit in a wooden box with drive motor: Emerson Elec Co, model KZ60.
No one has any schematics or other info. Unable to locate schematic on web.
Question: How to wire the motor. Motor has a ground, white, black, and red wires.
My thnking is that black is for “down” and red for “up” (or vise versa).
Our original plan is to remove a ceiling fan (which utilizes a wall switch), and use this to power the screen’s motor.
I envision a momentary three position switch for either “up” or “down” or “off”.
Would this necessarily require a 4-wire feed (ground, white, black, and red) from switch to screen’s motor?
Thanks!!

bench test the motor to determine which is up and down and to see if it actually functions...connecting the way you think it should work....don't forget to test the up / down limit switches at this time.
to your switch run power and both switch legs..no need for a neutral at the switch, perhaps for simplicity pick a third different color eg: black ..red.. blue.
unless you are using NM
be sure to connect the "feed" to the "common" on the switch ...no harm will happen if you miswire it...just won't work in both directions

Is there any information on the motor about what voltage it runs. I believe some of those screens run on a low voltage circuit rather than 120V.
Is there a name or label on the screen.
What is on the full label on the motor. There should be a label give voltage, curent, rpm, etc.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
sometimes those OEM motors only have a P/N on them.
.....especially newer stuffcan't have folks buying replacements just anywhere they feel like.

Thanks for the feedback. This is rural Alaska, and screen is 20 miles south of me. Temps today right at -40F. Relying on folks nearby to get me info off the motor.Emerson Elec Co - Gearmaster DivisionModel # KZ60K3IMYC103010 (Part #)?Amps 12 or 1.2110VoltsRPM 32Admittedly, some of this info begs questions.Irregardless, still seems like I would need 3 conductors and a ground to operate the motor in forward and reverse. Correct?White wire must remain a neutral (correct?) and two additional conductors for forward and reverse.Thanks.
Based on what I remember about these screens (20 years ago I sold a fair number of them), your assumptions appear to be 100% correct.
Bill's idea to look at the motor label is a good one. If that doesn't solve your problem, try asking the manager of your local movie theater to recommend a service person. There's a big national company that does theater maintenance, but it's been about 10 years since I needed to know the name. There are also a lot of independent one-man service guys.

while it seems logical to talk to the local theater, his screen is only 12' X 12' I thought it was more of a conference room doo-dad than a movie house big screen ...
although 12' wide ain't too shabby...sounds like typical gubmint overkill..probably paid $765,000.ºº for it new.

We have them that small, and much larger. Be it the actual screen, masking, or curtains, the motor controls are all pretty much the same -- just a matter of scaling the same ideas up or down. If this were local, I could recommend a guy....

I guess I still recall the Panavision screens from days of yore....the last time I was at the movies "The Hunt for Red October was what I had seen.

The big one on the Paramount lot is 55' x 30'. We screened a scope print of "Lawrence of Arabia" there a couple weeks ago. Some of the little ones may be under 10' wide. But the controls all work the same.

Thanks...

What did you get- just the screen or is there a switch, too? Emerson is still in business and if the screen is DaLite, Dalor or Bretford, they're all still in business, too. Otherwise, there should be at least one electric motor repair shop in your area. Call them.
