I am planning to build a small sitting deck over the porch roof shown in these two photos. My goal is to rest as little of the weight of the deck on the roof itself, as it is not built (I assume) to withstand that much weight. To accomplish this I will employ standard deck building strategies of resting the weight of joists on the ledgerboard in the back and posts in the front. I am reluctant to have the weight of the posts rest directly on the roof so I considering cutting the roof in those locations and tieing them in to the rafters directly over the columns, thus transferring the weight of the post of the deck directly to the columns below.
I am interested in hearing from anyone who has done similar projects and how you handled the problem.
