Ive been living in Colorado last ten years and now am moving to Tennessee.
The prooerty has a new 30 x 60 pole barn I would like to use for my shop. I was thinking since I’ll be there a long time I would like to put a wood floor versus concrete. I was thinking 2×6 (to keep the height down)on 12″ center spanning 6 feet and 3/4 tounge and groove plywood. screwed and glued.. But lately I am concerned about moisture and critter problems. Not much of a problem here at 10,000 ft. but I understand Tenn is quite humid with its share of the termites and such.
The Pro is I can do it my self, wood is a lot better on an old mans legs, and I just like the wood. What are the cons and how should it be approached
TIA
Dave

dave... pour a two inch rat slab and put your floor system over it...
*With a layer of plastic under the concrete to keep moisture out.
*The plastic is a great idea.I'd go with the heavy stuff, 6mill, tape all the overlaps, and come up the walls a foot or so.I'm in TN and have been for 4 or 5 years now.6' is a heck of a narrow shop. Is there a girt down the middle? Even with the plastic, I'd go PT on the frame and maybe even the plywood. This is a REALLY wet place. Nothing like CO. Was lucky enough to live there for 5 years myself and would love to get back.If this is a pole barn, I would also wait through the first few heavy rains and see what the water around the sides is doing. Most barns I'm in have streams running through them here. Might need some drainage issues addressed or it will be a mold-fest.Why the move if I may ask?Anyway, good luck.BeWell, PBHey Mike.
*Phat & every one elseThanks for the advice. As for the move When I came to Colorado ten years ago it was a decent place to live. I do trim carpentry in the Vail,Aspen, Breckenridge area. Its become a mad feeding frenzy in the housing are. People are arrogant ill mannered mostly from the left and right coast. Even though I live in a disney land I've come to have no life. For a 10 year old stick built house, six acres and pole barn I paid 120,00.00 for in Tenn. You wont find it out here for less than a half million. On top of that the tree huggers and the other side are in constant battle. I'm 55 and want to slow down. Hell even the garbage man asked me if I was having a nice day when I went to Tenn. Sorry to be so long winded.Dave
*By the way the barn is 30 x60 or 80. I just thought 6ft was plenty of span for a 2x6 will have to run 5 beams to accomodate themDave
*phat... hey back at ya.....good advice all around....
