I intend to install solid oak strip flooring, but my subfloor is made up of 3/4 in. plywood topped by 3/4 in. particle board underlayment. I’m convinced that I shouldn’t install the wood floor on top of the particle board. But if I pull up the particle board so that just the 3/4 in. plywood remains, will it be a sufficient subfloor on which to lay the oak strips? Also, is no one using adhesives in the installation of solid wood floors (in place of the building paper)?

Hi David,
What specific rooms do you intend to install the hardwood in? I have installed hardwood over particle board without adhesives. I've done some other things over particle board here also. Balls in your court.

*David,Yes, the 3/4" subfloor would be sufficient for your solid oak strip flooring providing the floor joists are on 16" centers or less. I've never used adhesives to install a solid wood floor. I would hesitate to adhere anything to the original subfloor of a house. Red dog

David,
There is no way I would install a hardwood floor over particle board. The whole idea is to have a floor that is consistant. I've refinished wood floor that went through burst dishwasher to fires and the only way they could withstand the abuse is to have a all wood conection.
