What’s the right NAIL to use for hand nailing unfinished oak strip flooring?
Should I drill a pilot hole for each nail?
It’s a patch job in one corner of the room. The rest of the floor is finished (poly), so I’d appreciate any tips to make the patch look reasonably well-matched.
It doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect, as there will likely be a built-in of some kind covering a lot of it.
Thanks.

I normally use 8d galv finish nails.
I cut the head off one and chuck it in a drill to initiate each hole. burns them in but makes a tight hole without splitting. Sometimes I use glue too depending on what that might do to movement in the rest of the room.
Finish? The patch is going to look like a patch until it gets refinished over the whole room

THANKS!1. Do you use galvanized because of worries about staining, should the floor ever get wet?2. Would rib-shanked nails be too much? (I think these are usu. used in underlayment.) The subfloor is 2x4's.
Ringers would be great if headless. Heads would prevent next course from seatiung tight with that head in the tongue edge.I guess I use galvies just because that is all I use for anything, except when I use stainless. Too near salt water here.
