We have little to no cedar on our wood lot, I am purchasing a bandsaw woodmill and plan on making my own shake siding. We have an abundance of pine and hemlock. It will be stained dark blue. Additionally I have a barn we plan on siding with board and batten. Which would be the better choice to make siding. Other soft wood we have are spruce, fur.

Hello,
Responding to your question about siding on FHB. I have a lot of experience with non- cedar species of siding. Please use email and I can discuss in detail and send you some photos. I use a Woodmizer. Steve. Email me [email protected]
All things equal, I would go with Hemlock. Assuming they are about the same age, the Hemlock is a better exterior wood and would cost more on the open market as a result. Now if you have old growth pine with younger Hemlock, I may change my answer.
