I am planning to restore an old barn building (40′ x 40′) which is made with a timberframe (mainly pine I think) with a cladding of single layer of 1 x 8 boards side by side.
It is going to become a workshop/storeroom and it will therefore need to be insulated as well as have various partition walls, doors, plumbing and electricity put in but before I proceed I want to preserve the wood in a way that it doesn’t change it’s old look too much.
The timber and boards are 100+ years old and the outside cladding is whithered a lot but as far as I can see there is only rot some places where the wood is in direct contact with the ground.
The timber frame is resting on stones and will be sitting on a concrete foundation when I’m done. My fear is that when the building get insulated and closed up condensation will create moisture that might cause more rot. I would like the building to last another 100 years if possible.
Any advice on what kind of wood preserver to use to protect against rot?
