All the houses I have ever lived in were either finished in brick or PLastic (OK Vinyl) siding. The place I have now is really old and has Wood sidin buried under a layer of ugly Insulbrick. From what I can tell the siding is all intact, and the insulbrick was added to either add some insulation, or to get rid of the maintenance headaches associated with wood siding.
If I rip off the insulbrick and paint the Siding (a miserable job to do but it would look alot nicer) how much of an insulation loss would I suffer, and how often should I expect to be out there with a paint brush cussing. Does wood need to be painted every summer? If I come across rot, how difficult is old clapboard siding to replace – is even made anymore?
Incidentally, I am in Southern Ontario (Canada) and am trying to make this place liveable for a few years before I tear it down and build a real house on the lot.
