Any body here ever used an electric log splitter?
I have always split with a maul or occasionally borrowed a gas powered unit.
But every one is using them right now and I have a few cord…
I also happen to have atorn rotator cuff, so the doc thinks. I did the MRI yesterday to confirm and detail it.
Then there is this thing with my heart…
So the maul is getting lonely out there.
Yesterday, I saw an add and then did some Googling…
Butr I’m wondering who has real life experience with them.

Make that three interested people. I'm renting a gas splitter next Friday. I saw the elctric one in a tool catalog. I really don't need something else at my house with a gasoline engine attached to it, if you know what I mean.....View Image
I made me one, I call it frankenstein
frankenstein looks quite a bit heavier than what I saw . <G>
How well does it work?

My favorite Maine-iac is puttng the maul out to retire?
Say it ain't so!
Take care of that shoulder and good luck with the search.
Splitting wood is actually one of my favorite pasttimes. Let me add on to that: "Splitting firewood for MY FAMILY is one of my favorite pasttimes.
And no...you aren't family<g>
Me too. It is the ultimate relaxation technique for me. Good low eyebrow work, not quite knuckle draging, and energetic enough to warm you up and give a cardio workout. But this thing looks like a lady in a red dress walking by

My 80 year old dad had a torn cuff,so we ended up getting him one of the electrics. Works as advertised, will split up to 14" diameter.Splits the majority but not all logs
Don't expect it to split everything, and you won't be disappointed.

Ive managed to figgure out about everything with the exception of fire wood and Im down to a few options. From the open heart surgery , I can not take pounding tools such as post hole difggers , sledge hammer , mauls, and Post hole bars for rocks . I dont even let wail with a 4 pound sledge. A framming hammer is uncomfortable swing with my arm and not using my wrist so I know that splitting wood is over with a maul. Its been two years and the doc says Im as good as its gonna get .
I bought a load of ends from a hardwood mill for nearly nothing and the other option is hiring it done as I can still out earn a wood cutter. I would think that mebbe the latter would be one of your options. I can earn more than two ricks of wood split and delivered and stacked for about 2 to 3 hrs labor using "fun " tools . <G> My feeling is that sometime or another you are going to have to let some of it go . Im sure you are worth much more on the job but I know cutting wood is fun being out there especially on your place doing it . Mebbe its time to take a kid with you if you have to be out there .
Another option is leaving the big stuff out there. By being selective ,at least here, I can walk off and leave the big stuff and thin out the smaller trees plus picking the easy ones such as red oak and ash to split . My dad taught me how to cut the smaller trees and be just as fast cutting big ones by falling a bunch in a circle in a teepee. Then they are holding each other off the ground . When he got old like we are <G> he carried Xs srewed together from plywood and carried a bar and a set of grabs. All the small stuff was held off the ground easily with out lifting it . He had put a lot of thought in that and used to log for a living so some of those tegniqes were used with bigger timber.
Or you could take the tool deduction and buy a splitter with a lift .
If the electric works it would be very helpfull though on smaller trees of around a foot through or so.
Ive been studying this subject as well.

When it came to cutting, I have a helper who dragged brush to fire and hoisted the chunks into the trailer, while I kept the chainsaw running. No trouble there as long as I keep my back tuned up.But there can be a lot of time invested in splitting and demands on my time seem to grow daily. Still, I am sitting here witha warm glow because I split a dozen chunks with the maul when I got out of the truck after work. That will come to an end for a week anyway, and then for 2-3 months after the shouder surgery

Here are the ones I am consideringhttp://www.ramsplitter.com/ModelH16.htmlhttp://www.omegastores.com/omegasplitters.htmThe ramsplitter H-12-3 is on the same chassis and uses the same ram drive as the gas powered ones shown with it. That leads me to think that if I decided to go gas, I could just swap motor for engine. But I really like the idea of the quite of the electric. I rather canoe than speed boat for same reasonOn the second link, it's the largest 9-ton maodel that appeals to me, except for the wheelsDR splitter, and Ruobi and others have 4-6 ton models is all that would probably disappoint me.

Hey Piffen-
Did you ever decide on one of these? My neighbor is agonizing over this same decision right now.

Never used an electric.
I have used a 5hp gas powered for about five minutes before returning it to the rental yard and renting the 18 hp splitter.
I found the 5 hp unit no faster or better than splitting with a maul. the 18 hp unit was pretty impressive but couldn't split all the tough dry eucalyptus I tried out on it.
Unless the electric unit runs off 220 and requires a 30 amp or greater breaker I just don't see how it could develop either enough speed or pressure to be very satisfactory.
Good luck
Karl
I just got a new splitter last week to replace the aging 5HP TSC store unit. The new one is a Rayco 13HP with a 4 way hydraulic wedge and log lift. For me, the log lift was the single biggest asset.....one that I didn't think I needed, but had no choice on this unit.
All my wood comes from a good friend that has a tree trimming business, so mostly what I get is the big stuff. He chips anything 15" and below for speed, so I get trunks and large stuff. He can loader lift 10' sections into his truck, up to 40"dia. and drop them for me to cut into log length and split. With this splitter I can roll a 36" log to the lift, and split away.
He has been getting calls like crazy for people wanting wood to split, but no one wants the big stuff...nobody. He hooked me up with the Rayco rep...and $5000 later I'm getting the cast-offs and splitting with ease.
At a cost of $5,000, was it worthwhile?
Are you using it for yourself or selling it commercially?

For many years I have owned a 6 hp gas log splitter. I manly burn white oak, red oak and locust and hickory when I am lucky. The splitter does all I need would not even consider pay money for a larger unit. I only cut and split for my own family and if this splitter is slow, so what! It wears me out just trying to keep it loaded with wood.
I use it only for my own burning needs, (outside wood furnace) so I'll use 6-7 cords a year. It splits at least 4 times as fast, so with a few buddies we can split what I need in 2 days, then we split for them also. They want to buy-in....not sure If I like the idea of "community owned" tools.
Worth every penny.
I follow what you are saying! I burn maybe 2 cords a year (might burn a little more this year with fuel cost). Mooney, I am also with you. Some of my friends go to the gym and work out. I tell them, go in the woods with me and cut and split a couple of loads and see if that is a work out. I am at the stage in my life that I can pay for all my wood, but I kinda sorta enjoy it.
I work in the office about 10 hours a week and in the field the remainder, but I don't get the physical acctivity that I did for so many years. It's kinda crazy but I miss it everyday
