i’m bulding some exterior stairs out of pressure treated wood.
the rise is 5″, which will come out of a 1×6.
the run is 9.5″ plus nosing, less the thickness of the 1x riser.
my question: is it better to make the step out of 2 2×6’s, or one 2×12? does it matter? i think the one solid plank is a better look, but is the two-piece better for drainage?
quick replies appreciated, wanted to get the wood today. TIA

2 2x6 or three 5/4 x 4
You do not want water to puddle on a wide tread

What Piffen said--plus wide treads tend to cup and may split anyway.
Definitely two pieces.
thanks all. 2 pieces it is. (well, will be.)
