I just purchased a wood burning insert for my fireplace. I would like to build a box about 4 feet by 2 feet to store firewood in and sit it next to the fireplace.
I am looking for ideas on the species of wood I should use and style, jointery, etc.
Anybody have any ideas?

Not to steer you away from this fine group of builders, but I think you'd find a lot more help for this over at Knots (woodworking) forum.

Then come on back here when you need help with the house itself. Welcome to BreakTime! :)

If you take a look at some of the old antique boxes they're just something like pine/whitewood. I'd guess they didnt consider a box to keep wood in a fine piece of furniture so they built it out of something they had or was available.
Most of the old boxes that I see are soft wood painted but I'd think anything you made it out of would be fine.
Jointery could be anything you're confortable with, dovetail, butt, halflap............you pick.
