Just wondered the best way to walk on/work on a slate roof without breaking any
slate shingles. I’ve got to replace some siding on a dormer on a 4/12 slope. I’m
thinking about laying down some foam rubber/ carpet pad type material to work
off of.

C'mon man,
Tell the man the system steps to install said jacks. I would, but I never had the pleasure of working on a slate roof.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

I was going to wait for Walter, so I don't step on his territory.
;)but just in case he doesn't see this...I'd use my slate ripper to remove a couple slate to fasten the roof jacks in place. Slate jacks are wider than a lot of others to spread load so you don't break the slates. The slateman can show good pictures. To step on slates, you want soft shoes like sneakers or running shoes, and step on the headlap zone. never knee point pressure in one narrow spot, but spread weight like a duck.It is easier to show somebody this than to talk technique. Then after the work is done, you replace the slates taken out ( as well as any you broke working on them) by nailing a copper strip so that it hangs about an inch lower than the slate will. You slide the slate up into place, then bend the tab up to hold it from sliding off the roof. A dab of goop can sometimes be used to glue it too, but Walter will get mad the next time he takes that one off, LOL

Thanks. The roof is on a one story. I might actually try to work off ladders with
spreaders, but I appreciate the info.
