We do alot of exhibit work that requires materials that do not off gas, therefore we use large quantities of wheat board. It takes paint, laminate, veneers as well as color wash stains. I was wondering why any one would want to use MD or particle board any more. All three are composite boards and they are all heavy, but wheat board does not contain all the chemicals. In an ideal world we would have a dust free, light weight and chemical free composite board. Is there such a product?

Mark,
I've never heard of wheatboard in Dallas....what is it? Anything that will take MDF off the market has my vote.

*What the hell is "Wheatboard"? I know if it gives less dust when working with it, its got my vote. The idea of wearing a respirator when routing or using a tablesaw annoys me to no end.

Wheatboard is a panel made of compressed wheat straw, a heretofore unmarketable byproduct of the grain that feeds us. I think it is bonded with MDI, a non-outgassing urethane precurser. When cut on the saw it smells like mowing a dead lawn...think "straw." It is available to me here in Southern CA, but I never saw it in CO. Friend of mine uses it for a most of his laminate counters, and would buy it as the core of his melamine board if it were available. Hope this helps.

Home depot carries it. I used it in a closet for shelves & it seems to be working fine. The smell makes me hungry when I cut it though.

Eco-Product in Boulder, CO also carries it in 5 x 9 x 3/4 configuration, which is great if you're building countertops, as we do. We use wheatboard mainly under linoleum (yes, I said linoleum - real linoleum) which is another material that is made from renwable and sustainable materials. We edge our linoluem coutertops with linoleum bevel-edge that we manufacture ourselves, or with bamboo cut from unfinished bamboo flooring. A truly earth-friendly countertop.

What does a sheet of 5'x9'x3/4" weigh, lighter than high density pb?
Chuck
*Yes it is lighter, I'm looking for the article and website info, will post tommorrow. I think 10-15% lighter was the difference. I think a search/search engine will come up with it also.....
