WOW Multimaster

Jemcon | Posted in Tools for Home Building on November 25, 2006 05:18am

I got my Multimaster and don’t know how I lived without it. I used it today to remove a  kitchen counter and cabinets where a cooktop was and now a range will be. Even the customer was impressed on how you can through the counter to the wall. Even the inside radius was a breeze. This thing is incredible.

that is one of the first places I used mine. A former client bought a new slide in range and I ran by to do the swap out for them.

The new range was a half inch wider than the thirty year old one. I just happened to have the MM in the truck, having just bought it, and few other tools than a screwdriver, knife, hammer and tape that day ( what else would you need to simply chang out a range, righ?)

That tool worked like that was its sole purpose in life and left me looking like a real pro for being totally prepared!

    Left with every one smiling

OK, OK - I can tell that's what I'm going to give myself for Christmas...Where does one get the best price?

I've been wanting one for years, for working on my old house, & you have just tipped me over the edge!)

I just went to my local tool store. It was 280.00 for the remodeler kit. The XL is 330.00. I figure if I need somethng I can go to the store and they can get me what I need.

Just be careful who you loan it to.  Those blades get expensive in a hurry, especially when someone tries to cut nails with them.

    1. Jemcon | Nov 27, 2006 04:07am | #16

Loan it. This is the last tool I would loan out. And IF someone is lucky enough to get it loaned to them there will be no blades included.

Amazon is currently discounting MultiMaster blades 10% as power tool accessories if you order two or more items. Probably can't do better, Fein seems to have their dealer network locked up, my favorite wholesaler couldn't even discount them.

  5. peteduffy | Dec 01, 2006 03:11am | #18

Found another use:  cutting those fluorescent light diffusers- those thin, flimsy, extremely brittle and fragile plastic things that shatter if you look at them wrong.

After several attempts with a utility knife, and cracking one more than I had planned for, I tried the Fein, and it worked like a charm.  Nothing like spending $300+ to save a $5 panel.  But hey, it's one more tool to have, right?

Thought about purchasing a Multimaster to cut out underlayment under the toe kick...Crain's current design are on recall...280.00 for a toe kick saw...single application. Any inputs??? How fast can it cut??? Which blade???...Thanks All.

    1. BenA | Dec 01, 2006 03:24pm | #20

How fast will it cut? I 've used the multimaster and its fast, It will cut a piece of hardwood flooring in 15 seconds. trim work 5-10 seconds . check out the web site, and did you see the infomercial. good luck

Apparently Fein is changing the mounting design for the Multimaster accessories.  Supposedly it will increase torque by 40% and be introduced in late 2007.  I guess I have an excuse to wait to buy.  The 40% number is hard to believe.

If you look around on Ebay, there is a seller of Fein blades that's pretty good. I think the name is something like 'erinrenae' or some such. Seems like they're about $20 each and are very good blades. I buy the wood cutters, but, I think they have metal cutters, too. Just search for Fein Multimaster blades. Bob.

    2. jerseyjeff | Dec 02, 2006 09:08am | #23

I think it makes sense.  I have the old style multimaster,  love it,  but occasionally the blade slips.   with the star nut it would lock the blade on good n tight, and let you use the full force/torque of the tool.  So,  I dont think you are getting more torque,  but you are getting to use all of it.

      1. DonCanDo | Dec 02, 2006 02:53pm | #24

I just gotta ask.  Are there any Multimaster knock-offs out there?  Or something that will do a similar flush cut?  I have a need for one about once or twice a year.  Like trimming a piece of baseboard in place.  I can't justify the price to save 20 minutes cutting by hand that infrequently.

I've considered trying to make one, but I don't think I'd be comfortable walking into a customer's home with a Fein blade mounted to a personal vibrator (I think you know what they're usually called).

        1. Shep | Dec 02, 2006 03:51pm | #25

          Don-

I'll let you try mine sometime. Then you'll run right down to Force and get your own.

The thing about the MM is it's so much more than a saw, or sander, or scraper. Once you have one, you'll find all kinds of uses for it.

          And no, I haven't seen any knock-offs.

          1. DonCanDo | Dec 02, 2006 04:36pm | #26

That's an exceedingly generous offer, Shep.  Thanks.  I'm not sure how we would work it out, but I'll keep it in mind.  I'll certainly keep in mind your resounding endorsement.

Yeah, seen that tool a number of times but never used one.

Curious to know if it's worth owning.

            A friend has that Bosch.

He bought the MM after seeing mine.

The Bosch is a nice tool, but the Fein can do so much more.

          3. user-53014 | Dec 29, 2006 06:20pm | #35

I have had the Bosch for a few years. It is great for undercutting casing etc. I bought the multimaster after reading all these posts and at first was not that impressed (just by looking at it). Last night however I had to use it for the first time, a situation where I could not plane a piece of wood at and angle in a corner. I took the E blade and that baby cut like buttah! The MM even sliced, with the same blade, shavings of wood so precisely and with such control I didn't even need the plane. Then I put on the sanding attachment and, well, I could go on, but I am very pleased and glad I bought it. It truly is a tool that nothing else can match. It is "fine tune" type of tool, perfect for that little problem that you just can't think of what to use. When you know that you have to put the recip. saw away.My only complaint is that the metal case should have a diagram where all the accessories go.I bought it as the holiday package from woodcraft, came w/fein vac, vac attachment for MM, extra blade,$25 gift card, and vac. attachments, $500. They were the only ones that had it, that I could find.

I just gotta ask. Are there any Multimaster knock-offs out there? >>>>I think Porta Cable has one...uhhh. Its the detail sander with all the attachments. I'll sell you mine if you want : )

This would be a good place to post the way to make the cutting blades. Someone here has done this and has the explanation for making blades. Using a pull saw blade? I think. I thought it was Piffin or maybe Luka. Can't remember. Wouldn't mind seeing it myself. As I see the tool becoming a part of my tool collection.......

The number of uses during my recent kitchen redo alone made the MM worth the price. It's the best thing since sliced bread. Mainly because it can probably do that better than anything out there too.

The prices on Amazon are resaonable, but the e-bay seller mentioned provides quick delivery at a good price....that's not a mistake, it's rustic

        5. cynwyd | Dec 29, 2006 07:19pm | #36

Bosch had or has a detail sander. Mine had such a build quality that the RPM's were effected by how had you held it.

My Fein is like everyone else, it just hums along.

          Klingspor offers an alternative

          http://www.woodworkingshop.com

If I translate that right 60w is half an amp of power, seems low.

    3. JJV | Dec 30, 2006 12:26am | #37

You know, if you get the new model with the star connector, you won't be able to make your own blades...maybe just get the current model and the little star adaptor they sell.  that way you can get cheaper blades or make your own, and get some of the no-slip ones for the blades you really need that extra holding power on.

      Just a thought.

Maybe someday I'll know a little something.
