Wow, my second post and already you feel
One week and I’m again questioning my abilities…
Today I was told [no Union guy this time… or was that Onion. I get confused] my approach to prepping garage doors was wrong and that it’s OK to do the following:
1 – frame garage opening
2 – sheetrock up to the edge of the opening
3 – install 3/4″ MiraTec [sp?] on the flat around opening, to dress up inside. Mind you, without the goalposts, because they’re unsightly
4 – Bolt garage door hardware to this and be done
I was incredulous because I always:
1- Installed 2 x 8 inside my framed garage door RO to achieve the required dimension [for example, the resulting opening will be 8′ wide and 7′ tall]. This would extend the jamb and allow sheetrock up to the protruding garage door jamb
2 – Then I nailed a 2x in the flat around the inside to accomodate the garage door hardware. Mind you, I installed an 8′ 2X up each leg to accommodate the garage door hardware up each side
3 – Install the 2x head between the two goal posts
Here’s my concern with the new way:
1 – That’s not what they recommend in the Clopay manuals I’ve read
2 – I’ve installed a bunch of garage doors. The hardware that comes in the pack has 1 1/2″ to 2″ lags. So, the former will grip no framing and the 2″ will do little as well. There’s 5/8″ sheetrock, 3/4″ Miratec which is fiberboard and bouncy – that leaves 5/8″ grip on the lags into the framing. With the high-torsion springs, it could rip right out of the wall.
Am I a knucklehead…. again?!?!

This is what the installers around here want and require. I think this union guy better get back to commercial work!
I'm not exactly sure what your problem is. You've got a mentor, and you ain't mentorable. I, for one, am glad this guy is protecting you from yourself... but I gotta know, where are you getting union carpenters in NC?http://www.tvwsolar.com

To make a small call out.
A pretty dancing girl was there,
And she began to shout,
"Go on back to see the gypsy.
He can move you from the rear,
Drive you from your fear,
Bring you through the mirror.
He did it in Las Vegas,
And he can do it here."
The title is supposed to say "..you feel like family". Just don't ask for bail. I don't do bail... unless there's something in it for me... in which case, the details can be open for discussion.
LOL, you'll fit in here just fine. Welcome.
I don't think he's that bad off!

you ought to stop worrying about what others are saying, especially when you have sound logic as well as MFG instructions supporting the way you're doing it.

find different adzeholes to kibbitz your work.
dunno about family but we're all here because we want to improve the way we do our jobs and product quality.
My wife is to blame. She tells me I don't ask for help enough... which is not entirely true. I do research... which is help.
The thing that got me in both situations was the absolute confidence from these two critics.
Usually an engineer or someone with a lot of letters behind their name will respond and I'll clobber the offenders with that by sending the link to them... because, after all, without those letters, we're all blowing smoke... notwithstanding the years in the field.
That's okay sky, I sometimes feel too. But not when anybody's looking, and I certianly don't brag about it. ;-)
I've only built one garage and reframed the door opening in a couple, but just as you described. Rock solid to this day as far as I know.

Not saying anything about right or wrong but around here the jambs are done as you say, extending to the inside face of the rock..
Door hardware is fastened directly through the rock .
Haven't ever seen it done different unless someone was covering a mistake up, nor have I ever seen a door/hardware come loose from the wall. (35+ years at this)
Dovetail I too have seen track mounted through the rock by garage door installers, but every door I have installed always says not to do that. With big red circles and cross lines over the drawing showing it that way.But as I said in the previous post it depends on the spring type used. Torsion springs are an no. Extension you might get away with it.Wallyo

Could be. I am not a garage door installer. Have repaired and replaced a few .
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
I think I prefer the other guys way. I think most "backjamming" is a huge waste of lumber.
FYI...they make longer lag screws.
Howdy. Granted, but I failed to mention the doors will weigh 400lbs. About the longer screws, it depends on who is doing it. If they are short some longer ones in their truck and they want to get to the bar.... it looks good from their house. Heck, they may not even show up [in which case I do them] if their favorite stripper... uh... I mean dancer is working that day.
no - he is the kucklehead
again
I'd far rather have unsightly than loose and wiggling around so the door can fall on somebody, which is what happens when the hardware works into the sheetrock. And I'll always take manuf recommendation over that of a union guy's opinion any day. No offense meant to other union guys who know how to read.

You've apparently accomplished good work in the past.....lasting and functional right?
If someone else has a differing opinion, engage them kindly into professionally backing their way with fact.....otherwise keep doing what you're doing and keep looking for even better ways of improving what you already know.

Getting back to the subject, the door. You do not say what style of springs are on this one.
The last clopay I installed called for the Goal post method, but this one was torsion springs.
Since all the counter weight is held by the pulleys and the torsion spring, you need the 2x goal post it says in the manual.
But and a big but, Cloplay ships with so many instructions books, there is one for thebasic set up, one for the springs, one for the pannels. What happens is the track book will say to do it one way (attach right to the studs) but that might be for a extension spring kit. You go to the torsion spring book that over rides the basic manual and says to mount the goal post to the framing then , then mount the tracks.
Last one I installed was a coachmen series it had 3 manuals overriding each other on what to do. They shipped with no springs went to install the thing all panels no springs!
But in hind sight it was a good thing, I wanted torsion springs they would not sell me it that way something about taking my fingers according to HD according to Cloplay. Factory installers can get it that way ordinary joes that know what they are doing can not.
So when it came with out springs I told them I wanted a torsion spring kit and some how got it.
So read all the instructions first.
