The 1980’s Masonite clapboards on my home have failed. I believe in a bad way.
I’m fixing the house up but am not sure how to do a WRB without wood sheathing (a Texas thing – they install cross braces instead of solid sheathing). The walls on my neighborhood homes are foam board on studs (I tore out a lot of walls on friend’s homes after H. Harvey) with Masonite panels over this. I can smell the mold. I want to install cement siding. I was thinking of nailing thin, foil faced plywood sheathing to the studs, cover with house wrap, and then furring beneath the new siding. Will this work? Can I nail the furring through the house wrap or does this defeat the WRB?

Take this opportunity to remove the fiberglass insulation and replace it with Rockwool. then install zip r-sheathing and then your siding. You would be foolish to not install a good sheathing on your house (I assume you are in Houston) along with good vapor/water/air barrier. Zip is excellent at all of these.
