When you arrive to the jobsite at 7:30 sharp and the door is rekeyed and locked!
Okay, the first assumption would be that there’s a problem with the contractor, but no it’s not me. The couple had a bad break-up and it’s hubby who is locked out. I already called her and she’s like “Oh my god, I’m soooooo soooorrrrryyyyy! I wasn’t even thinking… ” Anyway, I’m going to get paid for the day and she’s goint to make me a key during her lunch break.
So, how’s your Monday so far?

At least Ted's got a paid day off, we're just delaying the inevitable!
Doing some work at home that I get paid for too. But believe me, this is not a typical monday my any means. So far I still have all my digits, none of the boards I cut need to be stretched, haven't broken any windows, even all my cordless tools are fully charged. I have the feeling I'm being set up for a real doozy!--------------------------------------------------------

I've been repairing some chairs for a local church. I have to take them apart, clean up the joints, and start re-assembling. I try to put them back together in sub-assemblies, so I'm not going crazy trying to get everything to fit all at the same time.
So there's some down time while I'm waiting for the glue to dry.
That's when I'll hit BT. The problem is prying myself away from the computer to get back to work LOL
Tomorrow I gotta do a small repair at the Jersey shore. No daytime BT for me then.
I think you guys sent your weather up here. Its been 90 deg. +, with similar humidity.
Please take it back.

LOL, been there done that! Especially if it is hot outside. Go inside to wait for something that needed down time, A/C, get on the puter', ah, what the hell, then several beers later you say what the hey. Why go back out?

It's been raining cats and dogs here for the past few days, but nice and warm. Yesterday I went out in it, no umbrella, no hat, and got soaked to my underwear. Didn't even feel a chill. Man that felt good!
I came back inside and got hollared at for acting crazy (acting??), changed into some dry clothes, and the rain stopped. Then the sun came out. Then the humidity kicked back in. Got soaked again but this time it was sweat. Wasn't as much fun as the rain.
Today it's just a mite cooler, and just a few slight showers. Got lot's done and still managed to sneak over here to BT.
Checked the weather and looks like it's going to be storms off an on throught the week. Not to wet to get some things done though. And I've got a few nice little projects to keep me busy till it clears up. Then I've got some nice outdoor projects, so I can work on my tan.
Yeah, thing's are going O'Kay!
Think I might clean up my work shop tomorrow. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. --------------------------------------------------------

Aww heck, I saw 109 on the freeway today, 105 on the surface streets!
With humidity around 15%, it's not bad until it hits 115 or so. You'll sweat, but it evaporates so fast you don't get sticky.
Riding stops being fun at 105-that just feels like a blast furnace.

Been up to 32ºC here every day since Thursday. Fat humid air, too. Feels good, tho, after a real bust of a spring. Last Monday I was wearing a big fuzzy polar fleece; today I'm sitting here in my cut-off Carhartts. Man, that dive into the lake first thing in the am sure felt good.
And right now I got my big gyprock fan sitting in the window, sucking about 2 billion CFM of cool, dry, night air into the bedroom. Ahhhhhhhhhhh......

You remember that, huh? LOL
Years ago, when I was even more cold tolerant than I am now, we were playing golf in April, in the Poconos. Temps were in the upper 30s - low 40s.
I was playing with an older guy, who must have had 4-5 layers of clothes on.
I was wearing a golf shirt and slacks.
Now I'd probably have to wear a windbreaker.
Long as I'm moving, I can take the cold. If I sit still for too long, tho, I better have those layers on. I don't have the built-in fur coat or body-fat of that big goofy pooch.
The cold front along with heavy rain just whoooshed thru here about 10 minutes ago. Temp went from about 29ºC to about 18º in less time than it takes to write about it. I've been sitting here in a pair of shorts & a smile; I think I'm gonna go put on a sweatshirt and warm up my soup for supper.
Good sleepinng weather tonight....

I'm waiting for the storm front to come thru here tonight. The temps are supposed to be around 80 tomorrow. Much more bearable, especially if the humidity's down.
And I think one reason I have a pretty high cold tolerance, is that I do have a fair amount of built in insulation.

Hunh. Had more damage up here from the passage of that line of squalls than I knew. A big old dead tree down by the lake gave it up sometime last night (I didn't even hear it; was peacefully dreaming of something or other); missed my dock by about a quarter of an inch. Literally. Gotta go clean that up.
South shore of Montréal got whacked pretty good; something like 250,000 houses & businesses are still missing electricity as of 20 minutes ago. Trees down all over da place; shingles missing; one guy had his whole roof blow right off which was a real kick in the face as the day before his contractor had just punched out after 6 mos of remods. Now all that nice new work is sitting there under a big blue tarp....

The rule of thumb is to cut the blanks twice as long as the width. That way, when you get around to prepping the wood for turning, you can trim away any checking that's occured.
There's a end grain sealer used for this purpose- Woodcraft might have it. Or just use several coats of some old paint. Oil is better, but anything is better than nothing. I've also heard of guys putting a heavy layer of regular glue on the end grain to minimize checking.
Thanks on the turning tips...

Years ago, when I was even more cold tolerant than I am now
Waaaaaay back in college when I was in much better shape, we would go running in mid-winter Iowa in shorts and tshirt (and running shoes). I can remember some well below zero days (at least one weekend was -40 with wind chill). The biggest concern wasn't the cold, it was slipping on ice.

Same here. Ideal temp is probably 60 if I'm working. Over 85 and my work output starts to sharply decline. By the time you get to the mid 90's, I might as well not be trying to work.jt8

I can get 5, maybe 6 hours of work in when its 90. And I work pretty slowly, too.
And it takes me the other 18 sitting in AC to recover enough to do it again the next. day
There's a reason I only come down your way in the winter. LOL
Its normal to get some temps this range here in NJ. But its usually not 'til late July or August. Waay too hot, too fast.

We had about ten--mixed 10 and 12 footers of 5/8's for a ceiling in a garage (had to match where someone started and quit after doing about an eighth of it--also had to remove 2'x4' strips somone else nailed to bottom cords of trusses). It looked like rain after we loaded the truck, but got to the site and unloaded into the garage before it rained.
Lifting the drywall on to the lift and then up to the ten foot ceiling was fun--getting the lift and drywall over and around lights and door opener moter, rails and brackets was also fun. The guy I work with is about 5'-2" and weighs about 100 pounds, but he is strong. Still, it was a chore for him because lift hooks were about neck level for him (bad enough for me!--at the transition point where I wanted to go from underhand to overhand on your lift). Got it all done by Tuesday afternoon. (I didn't see this thread till today (Wed.).
Happened to me more then once wasn't always dry wall but needles to say it was things I did not want to get wet. That is why I now own a van big enough to get materials safely inside and out of the weather. Makes those rainy mondays just a little better
So, how's your Monday so far?
I'm a hero. Arranged yesterday to work on a backhoe this morning. As usual, I arrived mid-morning. Owner was sure my guess was right, faulty solenoid that wasn't switching F and R. He'd been all over/under the thing, checking wires.
Had the all-terrain creeper in place, wrenches out when I got there.
Hold on, let me read the manual. Hmmm... 2 more clutch activators, on the bucket control lever and one on the floorboard under that pile of dried mud. Yup. Now he knows what that little nub's for. Probably'll keep it clean.
This is why he never complains about my minimum, or start time. $120 for a factory manual: priceless.
PAHS works. Bury it.
Now That's a good monday.

Thread hijack-
I'm looking into doing a glass block window (first for me)
Are the pre-made jobs worth it, or do you just lay it up
yourself?
It depends on your bricklaying skills. I only deal with premade because I don't want to lose money learning a new skill. I can lay brick to a limited extent, but the mortar for glass block is different, made with silica sand and glass doesn't soak up the moisture like brick does. Also, you can't get away with slight flaws as you can with brick, anythign out of line or a joint thicker than the others will stand out like a sore thumb. For all these reasons, I say order it premade.
By the way, be careful handling the unit. They can be heavy!--------------------------------------------------------
Cheap Tools at MyToolbox.netSee some of my work at TedsCarpentry.com
Thanks for the input.
I can lay bricks no problem, and it's a small area.
I guess I'll compare prices and decide that way.
Is this for yourself or a customer?
I ask because if it's for a customer, as in my case, they pay for the unit. If it was for myself, I'd probably lay them for the practice. --------------------------------------------------------

but the mortar for glass block is different,
Doesn't have to be - you can use regular mortar, or white mortar if you prefer.
What I do (and what the local prefab place does) is built up the window on a workbench. Use spacers to set the mortar gap, then push mortar into the crack. Wait for it to cure, turn the window assembly over, do the other side.
Works great. I just use regular type S mortar.
I know my local dealer does it that way, but they steel strap it tight. You don't have any problem turning it over, even with a big window? One of those I installed the other day is 36" x 60", built of 40 blocks and weighs about 200 lbs. I couldn't imagine trying to turn that over with only one side mortared.
About the type mortar, I guess it doesn't have to be white. Just looks a lot nicer, especially from the inside. --------------------------------------------------------

Good question - I have only done basement windows, largest 24"x36". I use regular type S because it looks better (IMHO) with the gray concrete block walls.
If I were to do the larger window, I think I would do two or three smaller sections, then put them on a piece of plywood to do the final assembly. Maybe strap the section to the plywood when I turned it over, then strap it to plywood to move it to the job site so it doesn't fall apart before install. However, I haven't actually tried this, so it's just my thoughts on how I might do it.
Doing it in 2 or 3 sections isn't a bad idea. That way there is only one or two joints to line up on the install, as opposed to how many blocks time 4 edges.
There was one product I used about 10 years ago, which was like a clear, soft plastic gasket. Came in a roll, like vinyl base shoe sometimes does. It goes between the blocks - small pieces cut for the verticals and longer strips used in the horizontals. Stack everything dry then silicone caulk the whole thing. Of course, nowadays I'd use clear polyurethane caulk, but the same principal. It looked really nice and I think my customer got it at Home Depot, or similar big box store. --------------------------------------------------------

There is someone out there (quality co.) that makes a real glass unit, nailing fin and all, it might be PPG? I've seen the print ads never in person.
That could work.
Thanks, I'll try and find it.
LOL Yeah, well, let us know when you happen to hit that particular bit of good fortune again. Might be awhile.
Great that it's working.
I've had repeat experiences with the hoe owner. He surprised me with a $1k bonus one day. Which is not far above what he saves everytime he avoids having the dealer haul it in to the shop. Not to mention shorter downtime. They rarely break when you're not using them. PAHS works. Bury it.
I like those bonus days. Wish they would happen more often.
I remodeled a kitchen for one customer, who paid me the difference between my bid and the next highest because I finished ahead of schedule and did a way better job than the other bidder did on her friends kitchen. Heck, I was happy just to be done on schedule. --------------------------------------------------------

now carry wall in won't hardly fit thru bath door, finally get it there, stand up,cut the notches on the wrong side!still haven't figured that out. i throw a few things ,cuss a few words,go home tommorrows another day.
come home, went to the shop ,turned the window air on i just put in this weekend, won't work i think the capacitor is shot, headed to go get one.

So, how's your Monday so far?
Could be worse.
Started the day off with a nice refreshing splash in the lake to wake up, then got a phone call during breakfast from an old client I haven't heard from in a few years: 'C'mon over, I've got a few little things that need taking care of....'
Shed needs paint.
Water line needs new foot valve.
Wire came loose on an under-cab light unit.
New flat-top washing machine too low to hide where the drain hose is shoved into the drain stack through a raw hole in the gyprock.
Whew. Been a verrrrry thin spring so far. This is good. With all that I might be able to pay cash for a small bag of groceries and enough gasoline to bring it home. (Which ain't to be sneezed at, either, since I've been living more or less off my line of credit for the last two months....)
Then, as I'm turning to leave, Mrs. HO pipes in with one of those looks at her DH: 'Oh, he forgot--Take all that old stuff (tile-look printed hardboard) off the wall in the bathroom and put some nice tile on instead.
'And I guess you'll have to replace the gyprock while you're doing that....
'And you'll have to repaint the rest of it, too, I guess....
'And I don't think we're going to replace the tub and toilet but maybe we should do something about this sink and vanity....'
Went to the bank with a deposit check, too.

Isn't that the way it goes? When it rains, it pours - and this time in a good way. It's the same for me, one thing leads to another and those things lead to yet more. Hopefully by the time you 'remodel' the bathroom they'll be ready to do the kitchen, or have passed your number to a few friends, or decided on a new deck, or...

Hopefully by the time you 'remodel' the bathroom they'll be ready to do the kitchen,
I did their kitchen/LR/DR about eight years ago. New walls, new custom cabs I built, new lights, the works. Only thing they need in there is new floors & ceilings. (Floor is old glue-down industrial carpet; ceiling is staple-up 12x12 tiles.)
Might happen, but I doubt it. But I gotta get all the rest of that work done before the end of June.
So, now I gotta knock down three trees at another place tomorrow morning if there's not too much wind, then go dive on this guy's water line and replace the foot valve to start with.
And wouldn'tcha know--my best bud calls tonight at 10pm and asks if I wanna go hiking up the big mountain tomorrow with him and 30 school kids on a field trip. Sigh.

Sweet!
Had an ATM building that I was taking off an island get caught by the wind and tip over. Grazed an old ladies car in the drive thru lane next to us. Spent about two hours and several leverage tricks uprighting it by had. Sprained my ankle prety bad in the process.
So it wasn't that good. But others have it much worse so I'm not whining.

Guiness Extra Stout - one down, five to go! :D--------------------------------------------------------

Since you mentioned Guiness--I had draft Guiness at a restaurant the other night and it seemed watery--I like bottled better if that's how draft is. Have you noticed this, or am I just imagining things (yet again)?
I'm no connaisseur so I couldn't say. But I was drinking Guinness Extra Stout, bottled. I drink a beer maybe once a month, but when I do I like it to have come flavah!
On the drywall. try doing it witout the panel lifter. It's all a matter of perspective. :)--------------------------------------------------------

The guy I work with had talked about using deadmen, so when we got the drywall and some 2x's for blocking and nailer, I asked if we were using them for deadmen (as they were too short) and he looked at me like I was crazy and said he was going to rent a lift. Was glad of that--especially with 5/8's, and in those lengths. He said his back was killing him yesterday from all the lifting. I'd forgotten that my back went out a couple weeks ago, went to chiropractor and the next day it was a little achey yet and then no pain since.
No work today. Have to paint outside, but this isn't the week for that.
I'm a connoisseur ( self proclaimed anyway).
The draft is indeed watery compared to the bottled extra stout.
The bottles stuff is actually a different brew.
That's not talking about the newer stuff with the widget in the bottle.
That is supposed to be true draft.
I prefer the real on tap myself, short of that the can with the
widget is second best. Don't forget to try Murphy's stout also, it's very good. Domestically speaking, I'd say Anchor Steam makes one of the best stouts.

Side topic-
My home town brewery just had a major fire.
Not that they make high quality beer, but it's ours
and it's fresh. F.X. Matts
I'm pullin for ya.
You may have misspoke, but I've had Anchor Porter and liked it better than Guniness. Anchor Steam is good too, but it is a pale beer, I believe.
I had the stuff that has the dealio that carbonates it when you open it and I didn't care for that either--tasted soapy to me.
Ah yes, your right Anchor porter.
I'd agree about the widget also. Fresh is always better,
but it's truer then the old bottles.
I'm curious what it's like across the pond.
I wonder too--do they change the formula any for export (to suit American tastes)? Beer is better when it is fresh too, so it is probably better there if for no other reason than that.
Just bar talk, but I heard they do change
the bottles. That might just be for shipping
purposes tho.
I'm curious what it's like across the pond.
First time I laid my lips on a Guinness in Ireland far surpassed any 'religious experience' I've ever heard tell about. 'Twas in a little pub in Leenan, at the foot of Killary Harbour, just a bit north of Clew Bay....

I don't but the pub probably has. Figure it's still there even twenty-five years later; 'twas right next to the post office, across from the harbour.

I feel your pain.
Two years ago our 10# cat Indie was chased in throught the cat door by a neighbor's 14#cat at 3am. They went nuts in the living room. By the time I got up and ran the neighbors cat out of the house the living room was a mess.
Now granted add 10#'s pounds to your cat followed by 40+ #'s of bobcat toss in a few 75# plus dogs, ya I can see where you had a little tougher time of it.
At least you got something to eat. 8)
the bobcat was pretty young.... doubt it ever made it to 20#....
still made a mess....
