This was a challenging DIY project that lasted about 2 years from start to finish. With the exception of plumbing, electrical and tile installation everything was done by the homeowers (us!). The new bathroom was added to a 3rd floor in between two existing bedrooms in order to create a second bath in a small Cambridge, MA condo. The space was essentially “carved” out of what used to be the closet in a large L-shaped bedroom and was designed in very tight quarters fitting in a shower and sink around an existing central chimney.
The bathroom features a DIY poured concrete counter top for a narrow depth sink. An additional matching concrete piece tops a half height wall used to enclose the walk-in shower. The backsplash for the sink is a handmade glass tile mosaic – the scrap pieces of which were used to add accents to the concrete sink aggregate.
A wall hung toilet at the rear was chosen so that the soil pipe would have the proper pitch within the existing floor framing.
The main section of the bathroom is only 3′-0″ wide x 9′-0″, but the shower, because it was formerly the main section of the closet is a roomy 3′-8″ x 4′-0″
There was one “idea” sketch done with everything else to follow designed on the fly as the framing was being done since there were so many layout constraints that just needed to be laid out in real time.
