The IRC only permits ledgers to be spaced ½ in. away from the wall when using ½ in. through-bolts. Now there are avenues you can follow to use structural screws. Great news for new decks on old houses.

The updated version of DCA 6 includes a new deck footing sizing table based on the tributary area and four different soil bearing capacities. The new table enables users to calculate right-sized footings that are conservative but less restrictive than the simple footing Table 4 in the main body of DCA 6.
