Wide Spray Foam… Finally!
This spray-foam sealant from Great Stuff offers mess-free, 6-in. coverage.
Admit it—you’ve tried to use spray foam in a can to fill spaces considerably wider than the gap between a window and a rough opening. And while your intentions were good, the results were probably an ugly disappointment. But no worries—your globby-foam-mess days are behind you. That’s because DuPont has recently released Great Stuff Wide Spray Foam.
This foam sealant lays down a swath of foam up to 6-in.-wide in a pattern like a two-part spray-foam rig delivers. It’s a great solution for common areas like inside California corners and rim joist spaces, and around HVAC and can-light penetrations. Keep in mind, however, that this product is not a closed-cell insulation and is formulated to be an air barrier but not a vapor retarder.
One pass expands about 1 in., and several layers can be built up if you wait 8 to 10 minutes between lifts. The foam has an R-value of 4.67 per in. and has a Class-A fire rating when sprayed up to 6 in. wide by 1 in. thick. A Great Stuff Wide Spray Kit includes two 18-oz. cans, two white cone nozzles for bands up to 4 in., and two blue fan nozzles for bands up to 6 in. wide.
One can of this Great Stuff foam sealant covers 60 linear feet when sprayed in a 4-in.-wide band. This really is one of those products that makes one wonder why it took so long to hit the market. The kits are available exclusively at Lowe’s for $39.95.
