I bought one yesterday, it goes from 5000 to 12000 rpms, has a soft start and is doing a really nice job. The old 5″ pc is going to get a lot of rest.

Was there anything in particular wrong w/the old one?
How old?
Mine's ten yr.s old.
Wes
*Wes; The old ones are working fine, but the variable speed feature is a very good upgrade, it is great for detail sanding into corners and such.
*Thanks,BB- Merely gathering info when I can.Sincerely,Wes
*I've been using the Dewalt varriable speed 5" for a few years now Bean, and I agree, the ability to change speeds is great. I have to replace the variable speed dial about once a year though, they are real sensitive to dust and I guess the vibration. I'll be interested to hear how long your PC switch stands up. The Dewalt switches are about 30.00 each.
*I just finished a stain and laquer job where i utilized the sander with 220 grit paper and a vacume attachment in between coats at the slowest setting and it did great, the paper lasted an extrordinary amount of time. I love it.
*Hmm. Interesting approach, Brisketbean. There could be some intriguing possibilities here. Do you think that using it with a scotchbrite 000 pad, 1000 grit wet/dry, or something along those lines would work for deglossing a surface, or as an intermediate step before rubbing out a finish? Mike
*Yeah, you can get up to 2000 grit at an auto body supply house, maybe finer.
*Mike; I used the scotch brite pads for deglossing on my high speed PC for deglossing enamel, but i was useing this variable speed for sand sealer and laquer, it is a labor saving device for sure, without sanding through on the edges, with a little care. I was sanding probably a 100 square foot of wood paneling with one 220 disc.
*Brisketbean-Wow. I'll have to remember the scotchbrite trick for sure. Sounds like you're onto something here. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on a VS ROS. I like my 333, but if this is any indication, my 333 may be meeting an early retirement. How did the final finish turn out? Any discernable difference between it and a hand sanded finish?Mike
