I’ve seen some pretty nice stuff done in Sketchup by some folks here, so I was wondering if I could get some assistance…
I’m a relative newbie to Sketchup and was wondering if there is an easy way to create trim profiles in Sketchup. For example, if I wanted an exact match to some trim I have for use in Sketchup, I’ve thought about cutting a piece, scanning it in as a .jpg, importing it into Sketchup, scaling it to full size, an then tracing the profile to create the trim. I know some trim such as cove, etc, is easily created… but profiles that have ogees, etc… is there an easier way I’m missing? I’m asking with the assumption that the trim profile I need isn’t available in the 3d warehouse…
If tracing is the way to go… any suggestions for trying to trace accurately? With a mouse and the freehand tool, accuracy is a little difficult to attain.
Thanks in advance!

once I get the .jpg imported I use mostly the arc tool and line tool. It takes a bit of practice with the arc tool to recognize where to start and end a curve but it shouldn't take you too long to get the feel for it. Also helps you become a bit more intimate with the moulding your using.
After you get the profiles done, you're only ½ way there. Making the outside corners (and inside corners if youre really picky about detail) will do the rest. I'll see if I can find a prior thread where I gave instructions on how to do this. I pulled my large files I had posted there when they put a limit on our file sharing but e-mail and we'll see if we can wreck your night of downloading.
Right up your alley. See above post.

All you really need are the dimensions of your millwork. Here is a crown detail in SU. Basic drawing skills.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
not sure if my explanation was very clear but here it is:

it's actually simpler than it sounds so don't be afraid.
re: DL form the 3d warehouse. Be sure to do a quality check on what you DL form there. Since it's open to anyone and their brother accuracy varies so if you're lucky enough to find something you're satisfied with, great, but otherwise plan on building it.
ETA: and one more thing to help you trace the outline is box in the vertical and horizontal snaps using the Tape tool

You might want to use a spline tools.
You can get it with a plugin.

Put Spline in the SU help and you will find more about this.
