Fein Multimaster Tool

xMike | Posted in Tools for Home Building on January 28, 2007 03:12am

Does anyone have any experience with the Fein Multimaster tool?

I have a bunch of new heater registers to install as part of a remodel.  The replacement registers are, naturally, 1/2 inch larger than the space cut in the baseboard that received the old ones, so I have some careful trimming of baseboards to do.

I am told that the multimaster will do that job quickly and easily, but it is certainly an expensive, odd looking tool.

Is it worth the $$ or is there a better way to do this?

I've had at least 4 guys go out and buy one after seeing me use mine.

And today I did a quick demonstration for DonCanDo after the Jersey mini-fest, and I think he'll be buying one soon.

Really. It's one of those tools that you wish you had bought sooner.

  5. nycarpenter | Jan 28, 2007 06:26am | #8

The multmaster is a great tool!  We use it all the time for fixing oak flooring, triming door casings up for tile, etc etc.  Get the basic tool only with a couple of blades.  The kits have a lot of stuff you will never use.  I fould a guy on ebay who sells a blade for about $18 each vs the fein blade at $35+. If you hit a nail wit the blade you just KILLED that blade. Also  what you are cutting can't shake around or your just making noise.  (Did I mention this little tool makes a BIG noise?  Ear plugs please).  We love the tool and keep one  in every truck.

    1. neilcontractor | Jan 28, 2007 06:35am | #9

Do you have a link for the guy on E-Bay???  I need to get some blades.  Does he sell all of the blades or just certain ones?  Thanks

      2. nycarpenter | Jan 29, 2007 08:27am | #28

I will look for his contact info in my truck in the AM.  He sells a 1-1/2" wood blade that is better than the fein. If you search fein blades on ebay you will find him.  Somewhere in Calf- can't recall the city.

  6. caseyr | Jan 29, 2007 06:42am | #26

From recent experience let me recommend that if there is the slightest chance of encountering a nail or other metal, do not use the wood cutting blade on the Multimaster - use the steel and wood blade, even though it is narrower. Hitting a nail with a $30+ wood blade can knock down several teeth real quick. The steel and wood blade seems to take nails, at least in drywall, pretty much in stride.

I am using my Multimaster more and more for a variety of tasks, if you are doing cutting in limited spaces, sanding where precision is needed, and a few other things, a Multimaster is a really great tool. They are supposed to be comming out with a new and improved version Real Soon Now, but the current version is still a great, if expensive, tool.

    1. xMike | Jan 29, 2007 06:59am | #27

Since I'm about to be a brand new user of the tool, I will certainly take your advice.  Thanks.
