After reading the Hardie installation guide, I can’t seem to figure out…How does one transition from the Hardie lap to the Hardie shingles? Do you put a trim board in between? Any extra flashing?

I would use appropriately sized Z-metal.
With trim as the transition I would still use Z-metal on the top of the trim.
Thanks, is there a better way to transition? Can the shingles go right next to the lap?
I don't see why not, as long as there is lapping going on in each course. I don't think that I would like the look, though.
