Our current project is finishing and fixing the interior of a large remodel where the GC basically went belly up and was fired. The HO is an arch/designer and had the GC make custom 7 insulated glass sliding windows(2’10×4’6) and 3 doors(2’10″X 8′) for two additions to match the existing windows (1950’s contemporary).
The builders used plain steel V w/flange shaped weather stripping(?) set in a 3/16″ kerf as “track” with 2 small (non metalic) wheels inletted into the bottom rails. The windows work, but the “track” has rusted. There is gavinized track onsite but the kerf will have to be deepened (uggh). There is no space between the halves of the V, the wheels ride in the small groove where the halves meet.
The sliding doors have failed, my guess(I haven’t pulled them yet) is that the weight of the doors has splayed the plain steel “track” wedging the wheels and locking the whole deal up.
I think setting the galv window track in some sort of bedding compound (3M 4400BC marine?) so the V can’t spread will work for the windows, but I’m concerned about the doors.
Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated, these are nice folks who are paying for a lot stuff twice.
Thanks
Jim

So the HO is an Archy/Designer, and he had the previous guy have some wondows and doors custom made.
Assuming that the custom made doors and windows were made to the HO's design, you should probably ask this question to the HO.
His design, his problem. In general, I don't allow monkeys on my back unless thay are my monkeys.
Unless you're the lead dog, the view just never changes.
Actually, the windows are replicas of the windows that have worked flawlessly for the last 50 years. The Archy who designed the house died two years ago, he lived down the road. With the exception of the track installation they are well made.
This part of the "big list" is strictly time + materials. These folks pay (well) every week and I'm enjoying working out in the country (well, nice burbs anyway) after working exclusively in the city the past year.
Drop back and punt was my first instinct as well, but, after pulling the windows it doesn't look as bad I first imagined.
