Ledgerboard connected to band joist (instead of rim joist)?
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to how I can attach a ledger border to my house parallel to the house floor joists? Everything I can find has the ledger board connected to the rim joist, where the floor joists are perpendicular to the ledger.
I was wondering if I need to do anything different? (other then using 4x simpson DTT1Z connected to my sill plate)

Reading over the article and comments in https://www.thisiscarpentry.com/2015/11/27/builders-headache-with-deck-ledger-codes-2/
It seems like DTT1Z can't even be used in this scenario
Sill plates and rim joists cannot resist a concentrated horizontal load by itself, needs the support of joists or blocking to distribute the loads.
For a band joist, parallel to the floor joists, the tension attachment goes on solid blocking installed between floor joists, which distributes the load to the subfloor, then evenly over the house.

Thanks for the quick reply and the really helpful links!
It seems like I will need to go with Condition 5 described in T-C-DECKLAT19.pdf: full blocking attached with A35 connectors. Or a bite the bullet and dig another row of footings for a freestanding deck.
Thanks again!
In my opinion a free standing deck is the best way to go
Quick follow up question: for DTT2, does the blocking have to be continuous between the connector and the ledger? or can I skip the initial joist bay?
Specifically this connection chain:
- DTT2
- ledger + band joist
- space (no blocking)
- floor joist
- blocking
- floor joist
- blocking
- floor joist
- DTT2
I think you want to go with a solid path of blocking all the way.
I think that would be safest, but unfortunately the band joist is inaccessible due to a floor joist. There is about a 3" between band joist and the floor joist right next it (both of them are resting on the foundation wall) and I can't figure out how to insert a block in there.
I see.
then the path forward is to run the numbers and install enough of those A35 connectors, and the proper fasteners, you should be able to safely transfer the loads to the floor sheathing.
You need another couple instances of blocking to get the 6 feet called for in the prescriptive deck guide figure 23
Might want to consult with your local building department to get them to agree.
Sounds good. Also thanks again for answering all of my questions. Your answers have been extremely helpful.
I'm planning on running all of this past the local building department, just trying to do my homework first :)
