Replacing/adding lintel to support brick
1) I want to enlarge a basement window so that it’s an egress. Basement walls are poured concrete with brick exterior. Current window has a steel lintel, L-shaped profile, forms a “box” around window opening. Anybody know if I can cut the bottom out of the steel box so that I can simply put in a taller window?
2) If I have to put in a new lintel, how do I temporarily support the brick as I remove the old lintel?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Take out the window. Put a temp support beam (or two) through the window, supported on both sides. Remove the brick, concrete, studs, etc from the bottom of the opening. Weld on same-size lintel extensions. Patch the opening as needed. Remove temp supports. Ergo, egress.
