We have recently purchased a new home that is in a great location ie, close to the beach, sea wall with the only drawback being that it is on a relatively busy street. As a way of reducing the road noise, we are contemplating replacing a window and a sliding doorc. Can anyone provide me with any information on the best type of windows and sliding doors that will help reduce road noise.
Many thanks!

Triple pane helps....
pull off interior trim, use expanding foam window caulk in the rough opening- helps a lot!
What kind of windows and door do you have now? If they're single paned, installing double paned will help a lot.
Currently we do have double paned windows although I am not too sure about the quality of them.
avoid AL or vinyl jambs. solid wood, but surface coated OK use the foam in dead spaces, but low expansion foam.Triple pane Tight seals. A unit that can pass Daade County wind loads for design strength and has good U-values will have less possibility of air penetration which means less opportunity for noise to filter through.

The "best type" of windows and doors for noise reduction are those which are designed to reduce noise. So it's not a choice between standard windows, you'll need to research window manufacturer's literature and choose models with sound control designed in.
Generally sound control is achieved with solid or filled frames (not hollow vinyl), careful weatherstripping, and laminated glass.
You may have trouble finding good sliding doors. It may be easier to find French doors with good sound control.
At some point you reach a point of diminishing returns and get better sound reduction by insulating the walls, too.
