Vittorio Bertazzoni Jr., CEO of Italian appliance maker SMEG, wanted his company’s new line of small appliances to be long-lasting-which also means he wanted a design that people wouldn’t get tired of looking at. Given the retro colors and voluptuous design of the new lineup- which includes toasters (two- and four-slice), stand mixers, blenders, and kettles in assorted colors (black, cream, pastel blue, silver, red, green, and pink, depending on the appliance)- he succeeded. Designed in collaboration with architects of the firm DeepDesign, the appliances’ chrome- and powder-coated bodies (the mixer and blenders are die-cast aluminum) have a distinctive Buck Rogers vibe.
Prices range from $120 for the electric kettle to $460 for the mixer.
