Newel posts are an important part of any stairway as they anchor the rail and keep it solid. They are frequently quite elaborate and can be used as a sculptural or decorative element in a house. This one, in a renovated house I shot for Siemasko and Verbridge architects on the north shore of Massachussetts is particularly nice. In addition to the intricate carved shapes, it has a clear glass finial ball cap that looks and feels good.
