Beautiful and Abandoned Farmhouse in North Dakota
There is just so much that is right about this house: the single, sharply pointed gable, delicate trim details and porch are so sweet and balanced.
I’ve been photographing abandoned architecture for more than thirty years and continue to find it a fascinating subject. Some of the most beautiful houses I’ve shot in my career are those which have been abandoned. I don’t know if their abandoned state makes them more interesting to me than if they were occupied, but I continue to be drawn into their mystery and beauty. This little farmhouse in North Dakota is a case in point. To me, it is almost perfect not only in design and scale but also in its patina and state of entropy. The single, sharply pointed gable, delicate trim details and porch are so sweet and balanced. There is just so much that is right about this house. To me it is intriguing how so many perfect little structures like this have been made by folks with no formal training in architecture or design. But I often find them to have an almost perfect sense of symmetry and proportion. And then there’s the more existential question of how such a lovely building could have been left to dissolve back into the earth …
