Hi,
I’ve got a cast iron cleanout in my basement i’d like to connect to a drain for a basement laundry sink and the bathtub upstairs. I heard somewhere that you are not supposed to connect a drain to a cleanout. Is that true? If so, why not?
Also, the cleanout uses a plug marked 3 1/2″. Does anyone know what adapter I would need to connect to a 2 or 3 inch ABS drain? I figured I’d put a Y fitting on there that allowed it to still be used as a cleanout.
Thank you.

I'm not a plumber but from what I understand you could as long as you add another clean-out behind your connection and you are vented properly
is the cleanout in a horizonal or vertical postion?
the thing about a clean out is,it doesn't have a bend to get the krap flowing in one direction. it either just t's into the line or possiblly bends both ways to help the guy running a cable to get it moving in the right direction.
if it does have a bend in it directing the flow the corrct way i think you would be ok.larry
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T
MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE
DUCT TAPE.
The cleanout slants at about a 45 degree angle downhill and joins the main sewer pipe about 4 feet underground.
i'd think you would be fine then.maybe get another cleanout as soon as you can.larryYOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'TMOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THEDUCT TAPE.
Sounds like the current cleanout is in a CI wye. A 3" pvs fitting with an adpater donut will fitt inside the 3 1/2" clean ou plug hub. He can the install another cleanout upstream of the conection and in the 3" pvc waste line.
