Experence using SmartVent for Attic Vent
Hi all,
I’m interested in any comments about the SmartVent product used to improve ventilation in attics. My house does not have any eaves, so I have no eave vents, just a number of ‘mushroom’ vents along the back and some Gable Vents. I’m going to put an addition on the house, and then re-roof the entire house and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this system. It seems like a good solution to making eaves, installing bird blocks, etc.

I have no experience using that product, but I am in the midst of a reroof myself. It looks very similar in action to the corrugated plastic ridge vents that you nail though. It looks like your new roof will have a subtle angle at the bottom edge where that is installed, but since it is continuos it shouldn't be unsightly. I say go for it.
Also, look into using something newer than felt paper. I've got the Titanium UDL and I love it.

First off, I have no experience with this product, so I can't comment specifically, but if your house has any issues with ice damming, be careful. The ventilation holes look like a perfect place to allow water to infiltrate.

Thanks for the comments. About the ice dam issue, that is something we don't have to worry about in the Pacific Northwest. We plan to put some window screening material in the 1" wide slit in the roof. My wife and I are concerned that the honeycomb passage ways would be great for bees and other bugs to have free access to the attic.Mark
Take a look when you get it. I've seen some ridge vent material that needs that, but other stuff is like corrugated cardboard. Only the tinyest of bugs could get through, similar to a screen anyway.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA
