I’m not sure if this is the proper name: flared column? They’re a column that is similar to a tapered but instead of straight there is a decreasing curve from bottom to top (parabolic?).
Can anyone provide any hints or links to possible construction techniques for flared columns? I saw a small structure with some (wasn’t able to get pics) and I’m cosidering using them in an upcoming major remodel.
Forgot to mention – the columns I saw were stone wrapped which is the same as what I’m considering.
TIA

maybe you are talking about classic greek columns... to make them APPEAR straight to the eye... they built in a slight curve..
i think if you google on "entasis"... you will find the technical description
you can look at columns.com or chadsworth and get some ideas. Some of their stuff is pretty reasonably priced so before I sunk the time & effort into making one myself (even though it would be fun) I'd get a quote form them to see how much you're effort is worth.
Sounds like you're looking for a Doric style but if you research the classical style and columns on Google you ought to find the proper proportions for dia vs ht.
Thanks for the feedback, but that's not what I'm looking for. Here's something more like it:
http://www.jeffkerber.com/gallery/categories.asp?nameID=28Look at the chimney for the fireplace, specifically the stone portion. Envision that but with the curved tapers on all four sides and used as a structural element instead of a typical tapered/roman column.
