I guess this comes under “construction techniques”.
I’ve always had a problem with attaching the overflow/drain assembly to any bathtub. I don’t think I have ever got it right. Either I’ve cut and glued the parts too long or short or have the angle of the overflow part wrong. I’ve taken pains to get it right to no avail. I was just speaking to a builder buddy who has the same problem and like me, solves the problem with heaven sent silicone.
Not too long ago I read something somewhere that there is now an overflow/drain kit with a flexible riser to the overflow part. What a great idea. It’s so simple it’s stupid. I checked with Fernco and though they have all sorts of great flexible fittings they don’t have this part .
Does anyone out there know where I can get this?

It's best to get it cut and fit before installing the tub if possible. that way you can just attatch it once the tub is installed and not have to worry about it. I agree that they are a PITA.
I always do it that way, like I did today and again it didn't work right. I even had the drain and the overflow fastened to the tub and it got screwed up. I'm sure some of it has to do with dry fitting and then when you use the glue it fits in tighter and therefore shorter. I thought I compensated for that today
Anyways, a few hours ago I sauntered into my only local hardware store in this small town of about 4-5000 people. I looked in the plumbing section and guess what I saw. YES!!! A overflow/drain set with a flexible riser to the overflow. It's made out of metal and the corregated section is stiff but doable. Mind you I found it about an hour too late. But, next time.
It's strange that the plumbing supplier I went to 20 miles away had never heard of such an animal.

Couple of options.
If you go with a Kohler brass waste & overflow takes the cutting & measuring out of the equation.
Or you can do this, which has some flex to it

Use rigid PVC DWV fo r the tub drain & use 1.5" sch 40 pvc sauna hose which is very flexible.
