Isamemon | Posted in Photo Gallery on January 26, 2004 08:48am

I went to the archives

is there an istruction page by FHB or someplace or did I miss the archive/post that tells how to upload a picture to the forum

If all it took was a hammer and a saw I could do it

but i admit I am not computer literate

I do know how to put attachements and send them (jpg) through hotmail to other hotmail people

Wont be able to get back to it until tonight

thanks

P.s. while Im at it, how does the spell chck on this forum work, I click or double click and nothing happens

I've had the same problem for at least the last two days, hammertime.  I tried all day yesterday to post a photo and couldn't seem to get any reaction from the "attach files" buttons, figured it might be a problem at the site they'd address on Monday, but can't seem to get it to work today, either.

At least we're in it together, huh?

          2. Isamemon | Jan 27, 2004 12:27am | #8

            Hey Blodgett

thanks for getting back to me on this

havent seen your name in a while

I used to be here a lot, years past, as silverhammer,

we were going to stand some walls up together down here the last time I remember talking to you

or was it right after an earthquake, you were in a basement , developing film ??

anyway I was gone but now I is back

anyway thanks for letting me know it might not be just me

            You said:

nothing happens when I hit those either

I bet that is true... when you use either of these function (spell check or attach files) a new window pops up.  You are having trouble creating new windows would be my guess.  Sounds like a maybe browser problem to me.  First reboot your computer.  try again.  If that doesn't work, do you have a different browser like Netscape or IE you could try?    Have you changed any browser settings lately?Matt

          4. jimblodgett | Jan 27, 2004 04:58am | #10

Hey Matt, can I ask you something then?

You know when people send you a blue link in an e mail?  I can't get anywhere with those lately, either.  Is that symtomatic of browser preoblems too?  If you put that together with the problem attaching files, does that tell you anything?

            Thanks for any help.

"silverhammer"? Hey!  I remember you, Josh, yeah sure, you betcha.  You're down on the South Oregon coast, aren't you?  Maybe Native American?  You had some type website you sent us all a link to?  Buddy of JonC?  Was that you?

          5. dIrishInMe | Jan 27, 2004 04:35pm | #11

Do you look at your E-mail via a web browser or do you use Outlook or another standalone mail package?  What operating system do you use on your PC - Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, XP or is it some flavor of Macintosh?  If it is a web based mail, again, it sounds like you browser is set so that it can't *automatically* open a new window.    What browser are you using?  If it's IE (M/S Internet Explorer) I may be able to help.    In IE, there are browser security settings that restrict the opening of new windows.  My browser got all jacked around by some ad-ware a few months ago, and I learned a lot.

BTW - on the web links that are in E-mails try right clicking on them and see if other options are offered like "Open, Open in new window" - this is for Microsoft stuff, or, I guess you know you can copy the blue web link out of the E-mail message by highlighting it and then hitting <ctrl>c to copy and then paste it into a browser window address bar using <ctrl>v Matt

Over x-mas break my son isstalled  a new version of Norton Internet Security 2004 along with antivirus etc

wonder if that has anything to so with it

          7. jimblodgett | Jan 28, 2004 08:19am | #26

            Thanks, Matt.

I am using Internet Explorer on Windows ME (2000) and yes, I get my email from Outlook Express.  You hit it on all three counts.

What's weird is until just the other day I was doing fine, now this.  We did start getting DSL a month ago or so.  Don't remember if I've tried posting photos since then.  Could it have something to do with that?

            Help!

          8. dIrishInMe | Jan 28, 2004 05:51pm | #27

            Jim:

Outlook Express uses IE (Internet Explorer).  Your problem is with your IE internet browser.  I doubt seriously that the DSL high speed access has anything to do with other than, perhaps, when you were configuring the DSL, a setting on IE got changed.  Another possibility, is now that you have high speed access, I bet you are doing a lot more "surfing" and visiting a lot more internet sites.  Unfortunately, smart web site programers can actually modify things on your machine when you visit their web site.  Scary, but very true.  There is free-ware software available to prevent this.

I am virtually positive that the problem is a security setting on your IE, or something similar like a Registry setting on your computer that  controls the behavior of your IE browser.   The Registry is a long list of parameters (values) that control how your computer works.   Generally, messing with the Registry is considered a somewhat advanced activity of managing your computer.

I did a Google search for unable to automatically open a new window from "internet explorer"  and found this page:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-GB;q281679  This may or may not help you, but since it's already broke I'd go ahead and give it a try.    I'm sure you can find many more web pages on the topic if you spend some time looking around, but this one looks rather comprehensive.  If you are still stuck, If you know of a local person who is very computer literate, like a relative or friend, you may need to enlist their help.  They may likely be able to help you over the phone, but doing it via this medium (BT) is not practical.Entries in your computer's registry can be checked by selecting the "Start" button on your computer's task bar, then go to "run" and then enter "regedit".  Use the search function (<CTRL>F) to look for values that you want to check.  You may not want to change anything here though unless you are sure you know what you are doing  but just looking at things should be fine.  Or, you can change something if you are sure you are changing only the value called out in the above article. Let us know what you figure out. Matt

            PS:

I mentioned that there is free-ware software available to help avoid problems like this on peoples computers.

The November 2003 edition of JLC had an article in it called "Computers: Spies, Lies, and Staying Safe Online ."   Anyone who has access to JLC and uses the Internet should read this article.  It is written with as little "computer-ease" language as is possible, so almost any PC user should be able to understatd it.

            http://www.jlconline.com/cgi-bin/jlconline.storefront/4017cd5b00c63cde271a401e1d29060f/Product/View/0311comp

http://www.jlconline.com/cgi-bin/jlconline.storefront/4017cd5b00c63cde271a401e1d29060f/UserTemplate/82?s=4017cd5b00c63cde271a401e1d29060f&c=59eee3b15e62576286f5849fbd20763d&p=1 I'm not positive that the above links will work for anyone as I had to supply login information in order to view them.  On the otherhand, I am using some of the freeware described and am very happy with it. Matt

hammer... sometimes after you click on attach files... you have to wait... and wait...and wait..

then a blue border box comes up .. here  i'll try it.. since you're a buddy of jim's i'll post one of his autographed pics..

            yup... takes a while..

then you get a <browse> box and you go get the file (pic).. then you say "open"

and <done>   and then it thinks about it.. and moves it to your post.. and you say <post>
