I have a client with the following.a 25 year old house. The basement is constructed with a block wall covered with black tar paper, straped with 2×2 wood white styrafoam inbetween and then a wooden wall paneling in some places drywall in others.
The when I removed sections of the paneling and drywall i found what i beleived to be mold on the tar paper. At the time i did the work i needed and replaced the drywall and paneling. However it has been on my mind and that this mold may be a hidden problem in the house. I mentioned at the time but we let it go. They called the other day and asked to look at some other work.
Has anyone ran in to this problem before and is total removal of drywall insulation and tar paper the only answer. It is a 40′ x40′ basement.

Tons of threads on the subject of correct basement insulating practices here. Do a search under 'basement insulation' . You still get lots of renovators/GC's etc., doing it the old way: insulation/VB/drywall. Though the old way is not always the right way. Something about old dog's and new tricks I guess!
