While redoing my deck I used Grip Rite prime guard plus 10 screws. These have a paint or vinyl like coating on them. They where a pain to install. The deck was redwood and I pre drilled for the screws and half of them would strip out before full insertion. Finally used some paraffin on them and they went in ok. But I felt that was an unnecessary step. Anybody else have problems with these screws?

Yeah, I've had the same problem. Kept stripping out the heads. At first I thought it was me, but then heard the guy I was working with swearing at the screws also. We ended up finding a different box of screws ( different brand) and throwing out the Primeguard plus screws. Was quite fustrating.

arent primegard plus screws the ones with the slightly different head? its not really a #2 phillips its got its own special driver?
God, I despise those screws. They usually strip out about 1/2 way in so getting them out is pretty fun too. I bought one box a couple of years ago and they keep turning up periodically. I try to use one, strip it and swear and vow never to use them again.
What you are thinking about is deck mate screws. The prime guard uses a phillips head #2. Maybe I should have tried the Deck Mate.
I used to cuss out those prime guards, too. Impact driver is the ticket. Don't worry, we can fix that later!
Naw,square drive is the ticket,I love those little bastages.....
I thought every box came with a drive bit, and a 5# box came with 3, blue color, but a square drive works also......don't know what the problem is, I kind of like them. I use a makita impact most of the time, and it doesn't cam out much of anything, usually breaks the screw shank first. ...............Keith
Yep, I usually snap off quite a few, even in pt pine. I won't buy them anymore ... they're not much better than sheetrock screws.

Excellence is its own reward!
GRK Torx head, either stainless or climatec coating, is what I use on decks. Never have had one strip out. Had a customer last summer supply me with square drives and they worked pretty good. I haven't used philips head on anything but drywall in about 5 years.

This is kinda weird... I use primeguard plus solely because they seem to be the best screws I've come across with regards to stripping out. I wonder, Are you using the kind that can take either a phillips or a square (robertson) drive? That's the kind I always use, and I have found that if you use a square drive bit it works great! Phillips doesn't work very well at all with them, however, it's kind of nice that with these screws if you have to take one out or put one in, and all you have with you is a phillips, then it is possible to use it. Personally I have always thought they were a great idea for that very reason.
The ones I used where Phillips drive only. I should have looked for the square drive.
Ditto! I've used them for years with a square drive bit without any problems.
I tried "Prime Guard Plus" screws, one box only, 3" square drive and had similar problems with stripping in PT. It appeared every 4th screw head was 1/3-1/2 full of the coating. I threw them in the trash and bought some more Deck Mate screws
